Brianna!

DH and I love thr name Brianna for a girl.

But we have told it to two family members and they both misheard it as "Rihanna". Admittedly both are a little hard of hearing.

Do you think this would be a common problem for her in real life?

It’s fine, popular in the US. I don’t associate it with anything.

I would assume she was named after a grandfather called Brian. Which isn’t a particularly nice man’s name, let alone for a little girl.

queenofnorthsheen · 24/02/2026 13:20

I’ve just said it out loud to myself a few times and I think it could be mid heard as Rhianna quite easily, but it’s a pretty name and if you like it you should choose it!

chickenpotnoodle · 24/02/2026 13:37

Like others - associate this with the poor trans girl, BUT that's only because she has been so high profile recently - in 3 or 4 years she will be a memory - shame because it's a really pretty name.

Jugjug · 24/02/2026 13:40

It makes me think of the great big tall manly woman from game of thrones, I think her name was actually Brianne though so no the same but similar.
I prefer more feminine names but I suppose not everyone is opposed to the association I mentioned

scrivette · 24/02/2026 13:40

I worked with a Brianna and always thought it was a perfectly normal name, quite pretty, easy to say and spelled, opportunities for nicknames if that’s what you like. If you like it then go for it.

This is terribly insensitive. Please reflect on this post and ask yourself if it really was an appropriate opportunity to wave your GC flag.

Nasty. This was a child who was murdered. What is wrong with you?

Why was that comment nasty? They weren't celebrating the murder, in fact the opposite.
That murder is the first thing I think of as well, largely because I'd never heard of the name previously (and then assumed their pre trans name had been Brian).

Marylou2 · 24/02/2026 14:03

Yes it made me think immediately of that poor child who was murdered.

Whether you’re gender critical or not it’s really fucking unkind to misgender a murdered teenager, if you genuinely couldn’t bring yourself you call her a she you couldn’t have avoided posting.

Interesting how people on the feminism boards say they’re not transphobic but want to protect women (which is fine) but some do crop up with clearly transphobic views.

Edited

And also because she was murdered because she was trans. I’m gender critical but I respect people’s right to use a different name or pronoun if they prefer. Agree with PP that it’s a new low.

I think Brianna is a pretty name OP, and it’s nicer than Rihanna in my view.

NamingNoNames · 24/02/2026 14:57

Rihanna is awful.

Pemba · 24/02/2026 15:06

I am sorry but I don't see the appeal, it has a slightly tacky feel to me. Was it a name invented in the last few decades? As it doesn't seem to have been around for long.

Rihanna actually sounds nicer to me, maybe because it reminds me of Rhiannon. Brianna is not horrible though I suppose but I'd prefer Bryony or Anna.

SwedishEdith · 24/02/2026 15:12

Briar is much sweeter.

NamingNoNames · 24/02/2026 15:13

It looks like a bad version of Rhiannon. Rhiannon sounds different in Welsh, and I dislike the Ree-annun pronunciation.

Brianna does look a bit made up.

Swarly · 24/02/2026 15:16

My name is Brianna! I go by Bri (Bree) which I like but I’m not a fan of Brianna personally. I get Brian a lot on work emails even though I have pronouns in my signature. I have never met another Brianna in person so I’d say it’s unique in the UK. My name very rarely gets mistaken for Rihanna.

SlantOfLight · 24/02/2026 15:16

I don’t like it for the same reason I don’t like Nigella — it just feels like a token feminising of a male name.

NamingNoNames · 24/02/2026 15:21

Nigella is a lovely flower - it's just that the celebrity's father was called Nigel.
I know a Pippa (Philippa) whose father is Phil (Philip) and it doesn't seem as bad.

Calliopespa · 24/02/2026 18:36

I think it is nicer than Rhianna, which sounds like a treatment for Rhinitis to me, but I am not overly keen on Brianna either really.

NamingNoNames · 24/02/2026 18:49

OP said Rihanna not Rhianna

OhDear111 · 24/02/2026 18:51

It will be associated with that murder though. It’s how people think.

MauriceTheMussel · 24/02/2026 19:28

I think of the salad dressing.

I’m late 30s and didn't remotely connect it to the murder.

OhDear111 · 24/02/2026 21:58

@MauriceTheMussel Have you been living in a cave for a few years? Her name was everywhere and her mum is always on tv.

Babsandherwabs · 24/02/2026 22:01

When I was a tween I was going to grow up to have a daughter called Brianna. It feels pretty dated now.

When naming my real life daughter I was clear I wanted a name that wasn’t a feminised boy name. I just see Brian tbh!
