I know they’re different names, not just different spellings 😂 which do you prefer?

I really like both names. Think it also depends on your style,eg I am quite traditional so Felix would probably be what I'd use but I know lots of children with names like Phoenix and like those names too.

Neither!

Felix is a well known cat food brand in the UK 🐈

It's also a fairly popular boys name 🤷

Felix

idontwanttomissathing · 16/02/2026 13:36

My nephew is Felix. He is 20 now and a lovely young man at uni. My best friend has a son named Phoenix, he’s 17 and is doing really well; also a great young man with a promising future I hope.
I like both but then, both my children (adult) have unusual names.

Tiramisutoyou · 16/02/2026 13:39

Neither

obliviate24 · 16/02/2026 13:44

I have a Felix 🩵

Rockyhorrors · 16/02/2026 13:44

Felix.

YouSayPotahto · 16/02/2026 13:46

I love both.
This is Mumsnet though where most people favour mainstream pedestrian names, so Phoenix doesn't fare as well as it will among the general population.

I met a Phoenix several years ago, he was about 7, probably 16ish now, I thought it was a fabulous, cool name.
I also know a Felix (same kind of age) and he wears it well.

I'd go for Phoenix. He can always go by Nick if he doesn't want the big name.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 16/02/2026 13:48

Excellent Scrabble words.

Theemptycappuccinocup · 16/02/2026 13:51

My son is Felix, and he goes by Fe. One of my friends also has a Felix, and she nicknames him "Feel". I love it and it means lucky 💙

Tiramisutoyou · 16/02/2026 14:18

Fe is for Fiona where I come from

felix is a cat food - no!!!

SkyPanel · 16/02/2026 14:25

JoeSikoraTommysStory · 16/02/2026 03:48

Definitely not felix isn’t that a cat name?

Don't be ridiculous. There is a cat called Felix, that doesn't make it a "cat's name".
Here are some other "cat's names":

Tom Tom and Jerry - Wikipedia
Larry Larry (cat) - Wikipedia

@SkyPanel James the Cat..... I've suddenly had a whoooosh I remember that memory 😁

HeadyLamarr · 16/02/2026 14:51

Felix, definitely. It means happiness and good fortune, which is a nice thing.

EverythingGolden · 16/02/2026 14:53

Phoenix is not particularly unusual in certain circles. I prefer Felix.

camelfinger · 16/02/2026 06:26

Felix is nice.
Phoenix is ok for London.

Love the idea of a name being "OK for London" 😊

KarriTreeSullivan · 16/02/2026 16:01

Phoenix.

Felix is fairly popular or has been in recent years, and I find it a bit silly and weirdly irritating, and it's definitely a cats name. For a long time I thought it actually meant cat as I so associate it with a cat, and possible the 'Fel' bit as in feline.

I used to think Phoenix was absolutely bonkers totally off the wall choice when a friend picked it a few years ago for her son, however, I'm very used to it now and think it's really cool and I actually like it. He can always shorten it to 'Finn' or Nix, if he ends up not liking it.

Felix is boring and silly, Phoenix is interesting and exciting. In my opinion of course.

SpringingOn · 16/02/2026 17:09

I know a female Phoenix- it suits her.

Never been keen on the name Felix but not sure why - it is a fairly normal mainstream name.

CeciliaMars · 16/02/2026 17:58

Felix. Phoenix so gimmicky.

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 16/02/2026 18:09

The only Phoenix’s I’ve ever met have given themselves that name and ditched their old one. Presumably because they’ve risen from the ashes or something. Like, one Phoenix used to be called Louise. They’ve always ‘gone through’ something.

Fearfulsaints · 16/02/2026 18:19

I know a Fenix if you want to combine.

But people hear phoenix as Felix quite a lot if you go for phoenix.

PhotoFirePoet · 16/02/2026 19:36

CombatBarbie · 15/02/2026 15:02

Personally I like phoenix as I like more unusual names but I am not the MN norm.

I prefer Phoenix too. I wanted to name my daughter Artemisia, but her Dad (now my ex) said no.

MiddleAgedDread · 16/02/2026 19:41

Felix
phoenix has strong connections to the trans community if that bothers you.

Whippets81 · 16/02/2026 19:45

I have an 11 year old Felix and the cat thing has never ever been mentioned either to me or him. It’s only on MN that posters think they’re hilarious with Felix = Cat. There’s lots of animals with human names in popular culture.
