I'm due my first baby (didn't find out sex!) in March and we're struggling with names. DH is a lot more relaxed and thinks we'll look at the baby and know, I remember how long it took to name the dog and want some ideas 🤣.

We seem to b picky and don't like (to be clear, don't like for our child, lots of these names are gorgeous but I just can't see myself parenting one)

  1. Names ending in the ee sound (Lilly/Alfie etc)
  2. Names ending in a vowel sound in general actually (Layla/Noah etc)
  3. Old fashioned names (Dorothy/Stanley etc)
  4. Long names that can be shortened (Victoria/ Alexander etc)

I do like Celtic heritage names, which is our background (Maeve/Cian etc)
I also like strong sounding names with consonant endings (Elliott/Erin etc)

Anyone fancy a challenge and like to offer some suggestions?

Odette
Jade
Ines
Elaine
Jocelyn
Claire

I like Corinne, I hadn't thought of that one.

Too many school memories of multiple Jade/Claire

You've also hit on both mine + dhs grandmother's name, but that might cause problems if we went with one and not another!

Thanks for the suggestions - quite a lot of vowel endings there and names that can be shortened!😆

Some gorgeous suggestions here - thank you. I've mentioned a few already, but love Emmett and I do think boys names are harder.

See, I really like Ned, I think it's adorable but DH told me it historically stands for 'non educated delinquent' in Scottish education!

Carys is beautiful. It's so dated and doesn't even sound or look nice. It's like Karen or Tracy.

I like Declan.

Ned - I'm with your DH on this one.

HollyGolightly4 · 03/02/2026 09:53

@NamingNoNames interesting take! I feel like Karen definitely has other connotations and Tracy is just so 70s. I'd never choose either 😆

Carys is Welsh and means beloved I think, so a bit more heritage there. Each to their own though! I'm not sure I can envision my child being called Carys having said that.

@HollyGolightly4 , Carys and Dylan are 1960s names and I don't think it's a coincidence they were popular at the same time as Karen and Darren.

Carys doesn't really have much heritage (Love+ys). It was a recent name that fitted in with the fashion. Dylan does have heritage but so does Gareth.
They don't seem like baby names.
