I'm due my first baby (didn't find out sex!) in March and we're struggling with names. DH is a lot more relaxed and thinks we'll look at the baby and know, I remember how long it took to name the dog and want some ideas 🤣.

We seem to b picky and don't like (to be clear, don't like for our child, lots of these names are gorgeous but I just can't see myself parenting one)

  1. Names ending in the ee sound (Lilly/Alfie etc)
  2. Names ending in a vowel sound in general actually (Layla/Noah etc)
  3. Old fashioned names (Dorothy/Stanley etc)
  4. Long names that can be shortened (Victoria/ Alexander etc)

I do like Celtic heritage names, which is our background (Maeve/Cian etc)
I also like strong sounding names with consonant endings (Elliott/Erin etc)

Anyone fancy a challenge and like to offer some suggestions?

@dove76 ,
Bronwyn and Ceinwyn are girl names but misspelt. The wyn ending is masculine. (a bit like spelling Eliot as Eliotte or Samuel as Samuelle for a boy)
Cariad - like naming your child Sweetheart
Dylun - Not seen that before but I'd taken it to mean a design. Welsh Government: Dylun - A content design assistant - GOV.UK

Iltyd -misspelling of Illtyd
Daffydd - misspelling of Dafydd

Many of the names on your list are dated.

@starfire88 , Bronwyn is a bad spelling of Bronwen. As pp, the wyn ending is masculine.

I knew someone called Briege which I thought was lovely. She was Irish.

NamingNoNames · 14/02/2026 17:33

@EmilyintheUK , is it 'bree-ga'?

No … Not sure how to write it…. Bree-juh. Very soft at the end.

I always thought that was how Bride was pronounced!

The Irish is Bríd, pronounced Breej or Breed depending on dialect.
It’s a form of Brigid.
There are lots of variations though.
Breda (Bree-deh) which would be more like Bree-jeh further north. I think that’s pp’s version, spelt as Briege. Bridie is Bride-ey.

TBF I was basing Bride on the chalet school 🤣

She was 😁

I’m Irish and would just pronounce that as bride (as in bride and groom) but I don’t know anyone called it. I do know several Bridies (bride-ey) but they’re all elderly, it’s not fashionable now. And there’s a River Bride locally.

You’re tastes/ description of what you like and don’t like are exactly like my own. One of the names you’ve given as an example of what you like is what we went with.

other names on my list (some of which break the rules but still have a strong sound to them I think- sometimes I think the first letter plays a big impact and avoids names sounding too “frilly”) are:

Zara
Sadie
Brooke
Blake
Quinn
Raine
Martha
Marla
Erin

Rafe
Jack
Felix
Casper
Archer
Austin
Clay
Drew
