Opinions on the name Moses?

Hey what does everyone think of Moses?

Last name begins with a Y.

I think my only issue is I’m not sure on the NN Moe 🤣 But I don’t know if my love for the full name outweighs that

Ambrose is another name I hear fairly regularly, almost exclusively referring to older / elderly African Caribbean men. It would sound strange on a child who is not from that community (in my humble opinion)

Sorry to have to inform you but apart from. Miles they are all very Old Testament names. Very Hebrew.

Well you would have probably said that about Winston a decade ago but it’s getting more popular all of the time.

There is a tombstone for an Ambrose in our local churchyard from about 1850. Admittedly they could have been black but given the current demographic and location it seems unlikely. I think some parents in the 19th Century just chose more interesting names

My tortoise is called Moses. Lovely name.

Loads of boy’s names are biblical, I’m not sure why that in itself would put people off - the bible is part of western culture whether you are religious or not.

I would say that, generally speaking, calling a child John, Matthew, Peter, Mary, Ruth etc isn't quite the same as calling them Abraham or Moses for example. Those 2 tend to be found mostly in very religious families and more often Jewish families, so it does seem somewhat different. I think I'm correct when I say that the Puritans popularised Old Testament names for Christians. Probably due to wanting to be different to Catholicism. ( I'm sure my family were just being bloody awkward)

Well Gwyneth is Jewish, so it makes sense.

Her mother, Blythe Danner is Christian and didn’t convert to Judaism. Bruce Paltrow is indeed Jewish. Judaism is carried through the female line

As I understand it she converted but Reform Judaism does consider having a Jewish father to make the child Jewish.
