Opinions on the name Moses?

SanctuarySpaDay · 19/01/2026 08:40

Hey what does everyone think of Moses?

Last name begins with a Y.

I think my only issue is I’m not sure on the NN Moe 🤣 But I don’t know if my love for the full name outweighs that

Also on the shortlist:

  • Isaac
  • Jude
  • Miles
  • Archer

I think it’s a great name but don’t like it when it’s shortened to Mo.

I know two.

I think Isaac, Is much easier to live with day to day personally.

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 20/01/2026 07:31

I’d think you were extremely religious! Nothing wrong with the name but it’s very, very biblical - as another poster said, only one step away from calling your child Jesus.

TamarindCottage · 20/01/2026 07:38

If it’s good enough for the Paltrow Martin’s …

Kumquatzest · 20/01/2026 12:18

I think it's usable, though maybe it depends on your location and social circle.

I think it's more common in certain communities e.g. Jewish, African, Carribbean, Polynesian.

In my community it would probably stick out as sounding "religious" but I think people would get used to it.

@dogsarebetterthanppl , Raphael isn't mentioned in the Bible.

Moses is quite nice , thing is though Moe is not !
& it will be shortened to Moe especially by people when he becomes an adult .
Jude is 👌

@dogsarebetterthanppl , Raphael isn't mentioned in the Bible.

the book of tobit says otherwise

Sohelpmegod25 · 20/01/2026 22:38

Archer?????
there was a thread on here someone wanting to call their kid “Arch” and someone rightly said why not go the full hog and call him viaduct

just ridiculous

other names not to bad guessing a religious family?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 20/01/2026 22:39

The book of Tobit isn't in standard UK Christian Bibles, @dogsarebetterthanppl .

OliviaBonas · 21/01/2026 00:37

Noah is way better.

ScaredOfFlying · 21/01/2026 00:39

I’d think you were a basket case 😉

It’s ok but as others have said, extremely religious. If you’re looking for something unusual I’d bear in mind that although he will probably be the only Moses in his class he probably won’t be the only Mo as it’s also a common nickname for Mohammad.

Isaac is lovely and Miles is nice. Not keen on Archer. Jude is ok.

What about Amos?

I love Amos ❤️

mathanxiety · 21/01/2026 03:00

I don't get churchy/ religious vibes from Moses at all.

I'd call it rocker/ surfer dude, and in the same category as Levi, Seth, Ethan, and Eli.

I like Isaac and Miles from your list too.

Woodfiresareamazing · 21/01/2026 03:19

Honestly? Hate it, both just as a name, and because it sounds very religious.

Jude is my favourite from those you list.

SorryNotSorry00 · 21/01/2026 03:49

Moses is a lovely name and is original without being ridiculous or made up.

bridgetreilly · 21/01/2026 22:23

I think it’s great. A Jewish.boy would be more likely to be Moshe than Moses. Nickname could be Mo rather than Moe. Which obviously sounds the same but looks more contemporary for some reason,

Ketzele · 21/01/2026 23:12

I love it

Jude is from the Bible too...

Moses is a super name! It's not overused and in the 20+ years I've been teaching in London, I have only taught one Moses. I have taught a couple of boys named Musa and one named Moisés, the Arabic and Spanish versions of the name.

Zanatdy · 22/01/2026 06:07

deadtomeandyou · 19/01/2026 09:20

I’d be surprised to meet a white British child called Moses. I meet people called Moses not infrequently and they are usually middle aged or elderly African Caribbean men. It doesn’t really fit with the other names on your list.
My favourite is Isaac, the other biblical name that you like. It’s a name that I think suits someone from childhood into adulthood. Zack and Izzy are nice nicknames, too.

I was going to say the same. I have met a couple but they were African Caribbean men (and older as you say).

TikTokker · 22/01/2026 06:09

I love it. I’m surprised people are saying it’s very religious but they like Jude and Noah…

loislovesstewie · 22/01/2026 06:14

Only if you are religious. My very non conformist family were in the habit of giving Old Testament names to children precisely because they were non conformist. It was the tradition in the rather extreme non conformist chapel they belonged to. The best of your choices is Jude.

but jude and noah are popular names, moses isn't afaik, therefore the religious/biblical connotations are stronger.

Kumquatzest · 23/01/2026 08:38

To be fair, 15 year ago I would have considered Noah a religious name too, because back then it was rarely used in my community. Not anymore, because it's so so popular. Maybe Moses will go the same way if enough people use it.

SleafordSods · 23/01/2026 08:43

I like it although it was probably more popular in Victorian times. Not sure on Mo though as it always makes me think of Mo Szyslak.

How about Ambrose?
