Thoughts on Leigh for a little girl please?

I always think of it as one of those names that tends to have another name hyphenated onto it - unfortunately making it a bit chavvy. It's definitely better on it's own but I must say I love, love, love the suggestion of Leonie.

I have never heard of that town and assumed Ashleigh is pronounced Ashlay.

Loads of lads at my secondary school were called Leigh so to me it’s a like calling a girl Gavin or Gareth.

Do you know pronounce Height as Heet then?!

Im genuinely curious as to how anyone can get to adulthood without coming across a single one of @HugoYorway‘s examples.

I think of both Leigh and Lee as being male names, and very dated ones.

If you know height isn’t pronounced like sleigh, why the faux amazement that Leigh isn’t?

Funnily enough, I only know two Leighs and they have the same surname as each other too! Quite the coincidence. Although it is a relatively popular surname (not quite Smith but not too far off).

I don’t mind it. For some reason I dislike Lee (which I’ve only ever heard used for males) but I think Leigh for females is fine. At least she won’t be one of several in the class. Possibly sounds a bit old-fashioned but I do think it has the advantage of suiting an adult, which a lot of people don’t seem to consider. (Sometimes I read the baby name threads and think well that’s fine for a baby, but you do know it will be an adult one day!)

Really? I don’t live in the UK but we have a town called Leigh in my country too, and it’s pronounced Lee.

I think you're in a minority of one on that score.

Why are you posting these names? I’ve said very clearly that I had no idea that Leigh is pronounced Lee (and thought it was like Weigh, Neigh or Sleigh), so throwing more of them at me doesn’t really help 😂

I think Leigh is a lovely name. The two that I know are women. The Lee that I know is a man.

My granddaughter's middle name is Leigh, she has a short, uniquely spelt first name to complement it
