Hi, I'm expecting in March and it's a girl. Is Romilly a good name?
A slight fly in the ointment is that we had planned Roseann as a middle name as its a mash up of our grans names.
Other names on are list are
Vera
Dorinda
Hailey
Alyssa
Thanks

Also, Ian McKellen is from Romiley. Have you heard of him?! Not according to Wiki. Ian McKellen - Wikipedia

You have blown my little Romiley mind, @CrostaDiPizza. You are right, he is not from Romiley, but his parents were and he was christened here. I am going to tell the Facebook group that they can no longer parade this fact as truth!

TeenagersAngst · 11/12/2025 16:43

I came on this thread because I saw it in Active and absolutely flipping love Romilly. It's a gorgeous name. It's a clear winner.

patooties · 11/12/2025 16:44

I don’t like any of the other names on your list.
do you like Caroline? (Carrie or Caro) Marianne (Mari / Minnie / MiMi for short?) I like Rosalind, May, Faith, Harriet, Georgina, Alison, Clara, Nicola, Samantha.

KarriTreeSullivan · 11/12/2025 16:38

Absolutely never heard of Romiley village, I don't think I have ever been to the Stockport area. I have heard of Ian McKellen but unless a famous person is from your town I don't think many people pay much attention to wear a famous person is from do they? And why would a Facebook group about a very specific part of a small part of the Manchester area pop up on everyone's Facebook page? Quite a lot of people aren't' from Stockport or live anywhere near it.

(Just in case I sound stroppy and snotty, I'm don't mean to, this is a light hearted response to be equally amazed someone thinks everyone has heard of one small (?) place!)

I wasn't even right about Ian McKellen. Another one, we have James Goddard, Olympic bronze medalist!

I'm sorry I'm derailing the thread. I've got the flu and am feeling a bit delerious.

Never understood why people say things like this.

Why would she like Caroline? Presumably if she did she would have it on her list?

The names OP has suggested are fine, although far from my favourites. But I’d never think of just coming on saying “don’t like any of them, I like x, y and z, what about them?”

It's Christmas, I think we probably are all a bit delirious! 😄

Ngl, I'm gutted this thread over took mine about the name Romilly, which I posted 20 mins before this one 🤣. Hehehe.
I just wanted to know if it was a name that would gain traction because I've seen it a lot lately and I think it's absolutely bloody lovely!

I didn’t ask your permission to post babes. I posted ‘nice names she may not have considered’ as the list she posted is wild (Dorinda/ Vera /Hallie) anyway you do you - merry Christmas

Hello19834 · 11/12/2025 18:15

Rose is much nicer , really don't like Romilly.
Rosemary also pretty

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/12/2025 18:41

I like Romilly and it’s got nice nn options (Romy and Milly).

CrostaDiPizza · 11/12/2025 20:07

@aelfgifu2 , Wiki isn't always right.

Lisanne55 · 11/12/2025 20:13

Romilly is lovely. I like Romilly Rosanne or Romilly Rosanna too. (Not spelt Roseann though.) You could also have Romilly Rose Ann or Romilly Anna Rose. All lovely.

Chersfrozenface · 11/12/2025 20:18

SemperIdem · 11/12/2025 12:33

There’s a park and a few roads called “Romilly” where I live, so I struggle to see it as a given name.

Hailey is nice.

I think you live not far from me. Round my way it's roads and a pub.

Calliopespa · 11/12/2025 22:10

I'm afraid I don't really like it because the first bit sounds like you are saying Rommel as in Erwin Rommel, which is really not a good association for a little girl.

I do like the idea of Roseann - and I like Roseanne even more, and Rosanna even more than that, and Anna Rose best of all!

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/12/2025 22:11

vapemam · 10/12/2025 23:15

It’s a place in Stockport, guessing you’re not from round Manchester!?

That’s romiley

Giraffehaver · 11/12/2025 22:42

The reason we went with Roseann is because one gran has a variation of Rose and one shortens her name to Ann and gets very stroppy at anyone putting an e on it...and I suspect an a! Don't live anywhere near Manchester so I think we're set on it. Sorry to kibosh your post other Romilly lover!

I love the name Romilly, always have. But I'd go with a short middle name like Anne/Ann.

Is you are trying to honour a Rose and Ann, then the RO in Romilly is also part of Rosie.

I think long syllable first names suit 1 syllable middle names.

Oh I think so too!

It has also just occurred to me that Hailey (that spelling anyway), is also the name of a park where we live. Never actually been to that one so I forget about it.

BoleynMemories13 · 13/12/2025 07:15

I've always liked Romilly. It's unusual without sounding made up and I can't see it ever becoming overly popular. I much prefer it to the more popular but very nicknamey Romey.

I'm glad you're not put off by people suggesting it's like a place name in the North West. It appears it's spelt differently and that place is of no significance to people who don't live in that area. I've seen people suggest names on here before which are place names around me but I wouldn't bother saying so as, although they might seem odd choices to me, I wouldn't expect anyone who isn't from around here to have heard of them or be bothered by that.

Plenty of people use Harlow these days, and names like Preston. They baffle me far more than a small place near Stockport which apparently has a FB page which would only be if interest to people in the immediate area!

I've never heard of the place op, if that helps.

I do have the Rommel connection that springs to my mind, but not the place.

Aluna · 15/12/2025 12:20

Love it.

Personally I would separate Rose & Ann as the Roseann mash up has trailer park vibes.

Mistyglade · 15/12/2025 12:46

They’re all nice hot I love Romilly and like a pp I love alliteration in names.

RichPetuniaAgain · 15/12/2025 12:50

Romilly Roseann is wonderful. Very nice OP 👍
