I like Mabel, Effie and Martha

Celestialmoods · 09/12/2025 19:31

I like Rosie

YellowCherry · 09/12/2025 19:32

My favourites are Pippa, Claudia, Cassie and Esme (not Esmae).

Least favourites are Mabel and Mabli.

Aria999 · 09/12/2025 19:34

several of them have a strong 'children's book characters from the 80s' vibe.

I like Esme but she would be forever telling people how to pronounce it. (I like EZ-mee) but there are entire threads on here disagreeing about what's correct)

I quite like Nina, and I like Pippa for personal reasons.

Tammygirl12 · 09/12/2025 19:34

StartupRepair · 09/12/2025 19:34

I like Mabel, Heidi, Claudia and Martha.
What is your dd1 called?

Mosaic80 · 09/12/2025 19:36

I think many of your names sound like shortened versions of longer names which I’m less keen on. favourites from your list are Nina, Mabel, Claudia, pippa. it sounds like you like shortish names so suggestions…

clara
lucy
poppy
Daisy
chloe

Aria999 · 09/12/2025 19:36

didgeridid · 09/12/2025 19:38

Hallie
Maisie
Rosie
Nina
I do like others but more for pets 🙈

Tiuriwiththewhiteshield · 09/12/2025 19:39

I absolutely love Cleo

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 09/12/2025 19:42

My faves are Hallie, Rallies, Dottie, Effie, & Cassie!

I'm personally not keen on Nelly, Ginny, Maggie, Mabli, Heidi or Esme.

NuffSaidSam · 09/12/2025 19:42

Loads of lovely names on that list.

I'd avoid Marnie and Mabel if you don't want something faddy. I'd avoid Edie because although that isn't super popular there are lots of if Evie's.

Effie and Nelly are sweet but I wouldn't use them as given names as they don't offer much beyond cutesy. I love Penelope or Elizabeth with Nelly as a nn when she's little.

I had Nina on my list until someone pointed out that's the noise a police car/ambulance makes 😂.

I'm not a big fan of the old lady names, a bit too 'of the moment' for me so I would rule out Peggy, Betsy, Dorothy, Ginny, Martha and Maggie.

Hallie, Esme and Claudia are nice, but not my vibe. Rosie and Maisie are a bit meh, too popular when I was at school I think.

I've never heard the name Mabli before, but I'm not keen on the sound.

So that leaves:

Heidi
Cleo
Callie
Cassie
Mara
Pippa

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those. They're all easy to say and spell. All names that everyone has heard of, but aren't too popular. I don't think any of them have ever been super popular so they don't seem dated.

Oh and I do really like Cleo. I love Rosa but less keen on Rosie.

Emanwenym · 09/12/2025 20:12

It's a very long list with no obvious pattern.

Like:
Cassie
Dorothy (Dottie)
Martha
Heidi
Cleo
Claudia

OK:
Marnie
Peggy
Edie
Callie
Maisie
Rosie
Mabli - ok if Welsh
Maggie
Betsy
Nina
Pippa

No;
Hallie - too current
Esme - ok but more than one way of saying it
Esmae - bad spelling
Mabel - frumpy
Ginny
Effie
Mara

MirandaBlu · 09/12/2025 21:05

I like Esme, Cleo, Heidi, and Nina best out of these.

Maybe something like Daphne, Daisy, Chloe, Holly, Phoebe, Sylvie, Zoe, Xanthe?

Jollyjoy · 09/12/2025 21:14

I like lots on your list. Faves are: Mabel, Maggie, Claudia and Nina. I dislike Pippa. What about Nancy?

Why do you have to be Welsh to use the name Mabli? MN really are strange.

We had Mabli on our list and yes we’re Welsh but I don’t hate keep our names.

pottytrainingchronicles · 09/12/2025 22:10

im Welsh and have a Welsh name, hence Mabli.

thanks for all the responses - essentially there is no general consensus on favourites. Helpful to have opinions though especially when they are explained a bit more :)

I’ve swapped Nelly out for Penelope which we would nn Nelly rather than Penny / P

agree with one comment that Rosa is really nice - probably do prefer that to Rosie

Peternell · 09/12/2025 22:34

I like: Esme, Cleo, Edie, Maisie, Rosie, Mabli, Maggie, Claudia, Pippa.

I like Peggy and Nelly as nicknames, maybe for Penelope. Eleanor or Ellen could also be lovely full names for Nelly. I also like Ginny as a nickname for Georgina. And I like Betsy as a nn for Elizabeth. I know I'm being inconsistent here because I like Maisie, Maggie and Edie even if they are full names, (though I also like Edie as nn for Edith).

I prefer Rosie over Rosa and would use Rose or Rosie as a full name.

Names I dislike on your list are: Hallie, Heidi, Marnie.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 09/12/2025 23:41

I love Cassia nn Cassie, Claudia and Cleo

I think you need to cool off on the cutesy nick names as full names - I get the thinking that if you only like Kate why call a child Katherine, but I think you want to give her options that don't conjure up an image of a toddler..

Hallie - it's faddy and will date
Esme / Esmae - there are millions of them
Heidi - it's half twee half buxom German barmaid to me, so no
Mabel - I quite like it, but v popular 10-20 years ago, so perhaps a bit tired
Marnie - nice. Esp as a nn for Marina
Cleo - love it
Edie - like it as a nn for Edith, which is lovely.. but there are millions of them
Callie - really like it as a nn for Caroline/Calista etc, it's too nicknamey as a full name
Maisie - it's a bit twee, it was popular same time as Mabel, Mabel nn Maisie is better I think, but it's been overdone
Rosie - millions of Rose variations around
Mabli - it doesn't travel well
Maggie - it's alright. Better short for Margot/Marguerite
Cassie - love as a nn for Cassia
Claudia - love
Dorothy / Dottie - I like Dorothea and quite like Dorothy, Dottie fine as a nn, deffo not a full name
Ginny - nice enough, I think better short for Genevieve or something (Gwenhwyfar?)
Effie - Eff off. Not as a full name! It's usually short for Elizabeth these days
Mara - I think it's a devil in Buddhism. Otherwise makes me think of an aging barmaid in the 50s. Best leave it there.
Peggy - not as full name. OK short for Marguerite etc
Nelly - not as a full name, fine short for Helen\ Eleanor/Penelope
Betsy - not as a full name - but it's cute short for Elizabeth or Bethan
Martha - bad Handmaids tale vibes
Nina - it's ok
Pippa - if it's short for Philippa I like it
