Help me choose! A sibling for Finley, Rupert and Clara...

A sibling for Finley (Oliver), Rupert (Theodore) and Clara (Elowen).

Middle name this time will be Maria if a girl in honour of my mum, or Charles if a boy (mum's name is Carole Maria and Charles and Carole have the same name roots, plus it's DH's AND my dad's middle name).

These are our top choices:
Girl:
Sadie
Dulcie
Tessa

Boy:
Wilbur
Casper (this would have been Clara's name had she been a boy)
Barnaby

Opinions please! Surname starts with P with two syllables and is quite unusual (English).

I meant to say I just think of Sadie as a really 80s name and I'm not sure why!

Yes I’m surprised at this one - it stands out as the odd one out, a bit like Tracy (sorry all the Tracys!) as it was really common in the 70s and 80s then there was Sadie Frost.
I love the existing three names and would go for Tessa or Barnaby as the fourth.

Overthebow · 17/11/2025 19:32

I like Tessa, it’s the only girls name in your list that has the same feel as your current DCs names. I like Casper but it doesn’t go with Charles.

HibiscusCoffee · 17/11/2025 19:35

Tessa and Barnaby. But I like Sadie too. "Sadie says,Sadie says...what does Sadie say?!"

PrincessOfPreschool · 17/11/2025 19:37

I think the names Finley, Rupert and Clara all have very different vibes so I'm interested when people don't think so.

wizzler · 17/11/2025 19:37

I like Dulcie the best, and then Sadie
im not keen on your options for boys names but it sounds like you’ve been set on Casper for a long time, so go with that

I thought Finley was a bit different, but Clara and Rupert are fairly similar I think, and another in that vein would sort of tie them together?

I think Dulcie, Casper and Sadie would muddle it all though.

NewJobProblem · 17/11/2025 19:52

Sadie Maria
Casper Charles

NewJobProblem · 17/11/2025 19:56

If you want alternative suggestions, I think Lucy, Eliza, Isobel, Miles, Sebastian, Nathaniel all go really nicely with your sibling set.

Finley, Rupert, Clara and

I love Tessa - beautiful name that you don’t hear too often, and I love the simple shortening “Tess”
I also like Sadie - it’s got a pretty sound
Dulcie feels a bit downmarket compared to your other names

Boys - I like Casper, if you don’t mind the shared initials with Clara.
Barnaby is gorgeous for a little one but I struggle to imagine an adult Barney - I’m sure it would grow on me though.
Similarly with Wilbur - and he may become Will for short, which sounds plain compared to your other children’s names.

Suggestions

Heidi
Iris
Daisy
Elsie
Sylvie
Polly
Stella
Ada
Betsy
Edie
Mabel
Hazel
Daphne
Gwen
Margot
Delilah

Wilfred (Wilf sounds great with your other children’s names!)
Stanley
Hugo
Jasper
Toby / Tobias
Austin
Rory
Victor
Vincent / Vinnie
Reggie
Howard / Howie
Gilbert
Douglas / Dougie

Edited

Lovely suggestions! Many are on the list already but there's a few new ones I've added. I love Sylvie but it's a friend's top choice (and she also has an Iris) so I can't use those unfortunately!

I completely get where you're coming from, and I don't disagree. I just think it sounds really pretty and unusual. The Tracy connection does put me off though!

I love these the most too. Dulcie seems to be a fairly marmite name with more hate than love! I think it's beautiful.

The vibe thing is so interesting because I don't see the differences with my sibset at all, but perhaps the connection for me is that they are all names I love. Rupert and Clara are definitely more old fashioned which is my preference these days. Finley was our first and I dislike how popular the name has become in the last decade. It suits him completely though.

I think if you love certain names you shouldn't worry too much. They are your children after all.

But I think people were just mentioning it because you listed them all, so were commenting on "fit". I agree Clara and Rupert are more old fashioned, and also more European - specifically with those two quite Germanic, whereas Finley is more Irish/Scottish and so quite a different etymological background and, I agree, more contemporary sounding. But it is still quite a classic name.

I personally wouldn't use Clara and Sadie together for sisters. I think Clara is quite elegant and for me Sadie has a totally different feel. The Sadie video was truly awful!

SpringingOn · 17/11/2025 20:28

I love the name Caspar- but I think the suggestion of Jasper Charles is good because of all the C's. I much prefer Wilfred (Wilf) or Wulfric (Wulfie) to Wilbur. Not keen on Barnaby.

Of the girls names, I really like Tessa but agree Tessa Maria is a bit Teresa May - but you don't normally say middle names so probably not an issue. Could you do Tessa Charlotte (same logic as Charles). I prefer Darcie to Dulcie. Sylvie is gorgeous. I do like Sadie because I loved the Joan Lingard books.

Also Tessa Caroline? Caroline comes from Charles as well...
