I remember in the 80s/90s, loads of girls at school were called Hayley, Leanne and Gemma. For some reason I very rarely come across grown-up women with these names now! Where are they all?

They all work with me! I have had multiple colleagues of each of these names over the years, all in their 30s or 40s now.

Girls - Elizabeth, Nicola, Joanne, Lisa, Donna, Rachel, Louise, Sarah, Allison, Hazel, Keri, multiples of Katherine and Sally.

Boys - Michael, Martin, Andrew, Christopher, Henry, James, Matthew, Robin, Dominic, Adam, Ben, Jonathan, multiples of Simon and David.

We were born at the end of the 70s. None of these were all that unusual (I had the most unusual name in the class!) but Henry seemed really old-fashioned in the early 90s when we were at secondary school.

So I was at school in the 60's. Most prolific names for girls were Susan, Anne, Sharon, Jacqueline, Yvonne, Wendy, Carol and Pauline.

Boys were Kevin, Michael, John, Paul, Simon and Christopher.

Curiousrobin · 05/10/2025 18:15

Throughout school we had loads of: Matthews, Rebeccas, Ryans
We also had: Adam, Jessica, Holly, Alice, Chloe, Daniel, David, Georgina, Georgia, Samantha, Philippa, Laura, Kayleigh, Joshua, Megan, Oliver, Olivia, Thomas, Rachel, Emma, Sarah, Hannah, Lucy.

Any guesses which decade?

DiscoBob · 05/10/2025 18:22

I don't remember there being that many duplicates except there were two Emilys, two Daniels, a couple of Sams and a few Kate/Katy/Catherine variants.

The ones I remember were the unusual ones, like Cleo and China and Rio.

There weren't that many non British born kids in my primary school, so I guess foreign or ethnic names were less common.

Laura, Lauren, Rebecca featured heavily, as did Sarah, Sophie and the many variants of Catherine. I swear most girls had the middle name Louise.

Boys were Chris, Dean, Jason, Joel, Sam, Ben.
