Andromeda

I've loved Andromeda for a girl for a really long time but disregarded it for coming off pretentious. However, I'm growing to think it's actually useable and not that different to many names that are becoming more widely used, or is this just because it's been running through my head for a decade I'm now desensitised?

Greek but it also has sifi or space vibes that might not work as well

Zov · 31/08/2025 19:44

Don't do it!

If I met an Andie and found she was actually Andromeda I'd find it super cool.

I'd assume her parents were classics teachers.

Same, though I’d assume HP fans

Not really…an-drew has equally pronounced syllables. It’s not an-DREW.

Valentina = Val or Tina
Camilla = Cam or Millie
Patricia = Pat or Trisha
Alexander = Al or Lex or Xander

Makes me think of the sci fi series where Andromeda was the name of the ship's AI.

Another name spoiled by association 😔

SirRodneyEfffing · 31/08/2025 19:52

I’ve only ever seen this name written down.

Can I ask how it’s pronounced?

is is andro-mee-da or an-drom-eda?

GoldenNuggets08 · 31/08/2025 20:09

Go for it. Andi is my favourite girls name. Andromeda is unusual but not ridiculous!

Moreteaandchocolate · 31/08/2025 20:33

Andi is lovely. I don’t like Andromeda because it sounds a bit clunky to me, and makes me think of androgynous / androids, but that might just be me! She’ll be Andi day to day though, which is fab.

InTheNotswolds · 31/08/2025 20:35

I know one known as Deedee

Ellmau · 31/08/2025 21:35

I once heard an aspirational-type mum in a playground calling for her children: HECTOR! LYSANDER! ACHILLES! And even though I studied Classics at university, I thought: you plonker.

Hector is a perfectly good name.

Lysander is a bit more flowery but just about OK.

Achilles is terribly pretentious.

The trio: far too much.

It's An-DROM-eda

Espressoicecream · 31/08/2025 21:44

It was on our long list, dh and I agreed in the end it was too much to lumber a child with! We may use it as a middle name in future, then if a kid feels "out there" they can use it

zebrastripesarefun · 31/08/2025 22:00

I like Andromeda with shortening Romy

Firsttimebabymummy · 31/08/2025 22:10

Bluelilacbella · 31/08/2025 15:05

I love Andromeda and feel it’s similar to other 4 syllable names like Alexandra or Anastasia. I don’t understand what’s pretentious about it?!

Agree. Though I have an Alexandra and love her name

Always liked Andromeda too and love the nn Andi!

JillyGiraffe · 31/08/2025 22:16

Sounds like the name of a space rocket or old computer program! Any name you choose, some will love it and some will hate it - too common, too rare, too long, too short etc so if you really love it for your baby girl, go for it, and don’t let people (like me) put you off…

JillyGiraffe · 31/08/2025 22:16

P.s. Andi is lovely!

Alexandrine · 31/08/2025 22:23

I love Andromeda, nn Andie too. I swear I first read it in an old sci-fi/fantasy book though, not HP. I’m aware of the Greek Myth but in principle I don’t see why Andromeda is any weirder than Aurora, Athena etc and those are becoming more popular.

Having said that, personally I likely wouldn’t use any of those either - I prefer classic, timeless aka “boring” names for kids as you never know what sort of personality they will have. An introvert/shyer kid might be embarrassed about having a name like Athena or Andromeda rather than being another Alice or Anna. Doesn’t mean Andromeda isn’t a gorgeous name though - it would make a brilliant pet name!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 01/09/2025 05:08

You might consider Andrina?

Daffy18 · 01/09/2025 06:28

I don’t hate I’m just not familiar with it or how it’s pronounced. I know an Andie but she’s Alexandra her mum used the nn Sandie but she hates Sandie. I also used to work with and Andi and she was just Andi on her bc too

Orangepate · 01/09/2025 06:38

Buy a cat, call it Andromeda, then give your child a human name..

UpUpAwayz · 01/09/2025 06:43

I know an Andromeda and it’s shortened to Romy (pronounced rom-ee) which I think is a sweet shortening

I mean it's fine if you don't like the name but honestly there's just no need for such a comment. Maybe you should share your name and we can all make unkind and unnecessary comments about it. Hmm

UnfashionableArtex · 01/09/2025 06:59

I think it's beautiful.

PanderBare · 01/09/2025 07:23

@Spies , @Screenburn The emphasis is on the And. It's AND-rew not An-DREW.

Maybe where you live but where I live it's definitely pronounce more like An-DREW
