Andromeda

I've loved Andromeda for a girl for a really long time but disregarded it for coming off pretentious. However, I'm growing to think it's actually useable and not that different to many names that are becoming more widely used, or is this just because it's been running through my head for a decade I'm now desensitised?

@Tulalluh , unless you suggest the name John or Susan MN instantly hate any name ideas.
That's not the case. The MN approval is only for names like James and Elizabeth (safe classics) or Noah and Sophia (overused).

PanderBare · 01/09/2025 07:34

@Spies , Pattern more like Louise or Denise, not Lewis or Dennis?
It's /ˈændruː/, so the stress is normally on the first syllable.

ClearFruit · 01/09/2025 07:36

God, no.

BigOldBlobsy · 01/09/2025 07:38

i know someone with this name, very close relative. Suits the name, very popular in school, social and doing well career wise. No bullying.
She hates it shortened. Most people say it right to be fair and she will correct them if not? Never a big deal.

BigOldBlobsy · 01/09/2025 07:39

If she ever does shorten it (as family we call her nicknames) it’s Romi or Drom.
I’m also bemused by Mumsnet drama over any name that isn’t Sophia or Jack. 😂

Buy a cat, call it Andromeda, then give your child a human name..

Andromeda was a person from mythology. You mean an ‘English’ name

crossstitchingnana · 01/09/2025 07:40

Jesus. Whatever happened to Jane/Milly/phoebe etc?

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 01/09/2025 07:42

I know an Andromeda, a child at DC school. As a PP said, she's incredibly confident. The other kids dont really notice the name.

I don't think its pretty though. Its clunky and odd to me.

Accents are funny things to be fair.

Either way I'm sure most can agree it's really not worth the tizz some people seem to be getting into over how traumatised and picked on some are trying to claim a child would be with this name.

They still exist, but now a wider range of names are used which is great. Interesting you pick Phoebe as an example which is a name from Greek mythology just like Andromeda.

Newname42 · 01/09/2025 07:46

Nothing wrong with a Greek or long-ish name, but Andromeda makes me think of Android / sci-fi / Star Trek.

ravenclaworslytherin · 01/09/2025 07:50

I really like it. It's no more pretentious than Persephone, Athena, Artemis etc I love Andie for a girl!

NewLifter · 01/09/2025 08:01

I really don't like it but then I don't like most of the names mentioned here, such as persephone. Awful!

PanderBare · 01/09/2025 08:03

Do you think Andromedary or is it just me? Smile

PanderBare · 01/09/2025 08:05

I know a female Andy, and I don't like the nn.
Her full name is much nicer.

She hasn't made it up. Hmm The amount of ignorance people show on this board is sometimes mind-blowing. Maybe expand your mind a bit and go read a book?

Quite!

It sounds very heavy to me, like it would suit a large battleship.

I immediately thought "ship."🚢

SaidAHipHopTheHippieToTheHippie · 01/09/2025 08:21

It sounds like Androgynous to me.

So the OP expects everyone to know that / google it to understand that / know how to pronounce it properly / spell it ? Still a no from me.

DameSylvieKrin · 01/09/2025 08:23

I know an Andrina if you are looking for alternatives that can be shortened to Andi.
I love a lot of Greek names but am not a fan of the ‘drom’ syllable in this one.

I read plenty of books thank you. I still don’t think she should use it as a name for a lovely baby girl. Spelling things out every single time and explaining how to pronounce names is draining.

Oh it does!

🐪An androgenous dromedary!

ETA mythological names are quite popular atm op, so it's fine from that perspective, but I don/t actually think its a pretty-sounding name. Names like Persephone are much "lighter."
