Alice or Anna

Hi All, expecting second baby girl, our toddler is named Emma. We absolutely love Anna and don’t really mind that they are similar sounding (actually we almost like it more for this) but we also like Alice.

Baby girl will absolutely be one of these 2 names, we aren’t looking for new ideas.

Which would you pick Alice or Anna

Too similar sounding so I think Alice. Unless you would consider Annabel or Annalise.

Both v boring. Alice sounds wet too, so I'd probably have to reluctantly say Anna in that case.

Ugh

Both lovely names. I do prefer Anna overall though , but with Emma as a sister it doesn't really work, so for that reason I'd go with Alice.

Same here.

You must be very old, because I don't know any 80 year olds called Alice, Anna or Emma! Old and unkind, what an unpleasant mix.

My great aunt Alice is 95.

greengreyblue · 29/08/2025 18:56

Jane Austen wrote a book called Emma. These are classic names .

Emanwenym · 29/08/2025 18:57

@CosyNavyLeader , they're still around, but other similar names are popular.

Emma - Ella, Emily, Emmeline, Emilia, Amelia...
Anna - Hannah, Anya, Annabelle, Annabella, Annalise, Anneli, ...
Alice - Alicia, Alyssa etc

The 'boring' names will outlast the others.

Anna is lovely. But if you give birth an 80yr old lady then Alice
Sorry 😞

When you’re downstairs and they’re upstairs with a bit of background noise they won’t know who you are calling.
So Alice.
(I would have said Anna otherwise.)

This

Rubbish. Alice in Wonderland escaped your notice. I work in primary education Alice is consistent but not common.

Emanwenym · 29/08/2025 19:01

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud , an 80 yr old woman would not be all that likely to be called any of those names. The names weren't popular in the 1940s.

They were.

excusezmoi · 29/08/2025 19:06

Deffo Alice. It's timeless, pretty and pairs nicely with Emma.

Emanwenym · 29/08/2025 19:07

@greengreyblue , not according to ONS data.

greengreyblue · 29/08/2025 19:10

They’re classic names. They don’t rely on fashion, that is their appeal. My DM was born in the 1940s and her best friend was Anna, her aunt was Alice. Anna Wintour is in her 70s/ 80s.

Alice is edgier
Anna is safe

Which would fit your daughter?

Pebbles16 · 29/08/2025 19:15

Alice, my DGM's name. My middle name is a version of it.
Alice is a lovely name and a nice contrast to Emma (also, my other grandmother's name)

MoominMai · 29/08/2025 19:25

Alice because it seems both an old and modern classic sort of name to me.

Also, people invariably shorten children’s names and Ali and Em sound cute 😊

Such a useful contribution.

ohpoowhatnow · 29/08/2025 19:41

Anna and Emma are lovely together

Perzival · 29/08/2025 19:52

Anna, my niece is called Alice and the number of people who sing/say "Alice, Alice who the f#*% is Alice" drives her insane. She often says she would have never chosen Akice if she thought for a second this would be said so much.

Anna is classical and sounds great with Emma.

middleagedandinarage · 29/08/2025 20:00

Love both! Also love Emma. I would go for Alice because I think it sounds lovely with Emma

JillyGiraffe · 29/08/2025 20:17

Alice!

ILoveWhales · 29/08/2025 20:35

Both beautiful whatever you decide.

I've already said I would prefer alice, but that's because it's regal.

Anna. Alice is wet.

Second this.

Anna & Emma are both beautiful names. Good choice 👍
