Names like Roger and Alan…?

My DH has terrible taste in names! When I had my first boy, the names he liked were Roger, Alan, Norman (!) We settled on John (as modern as he would get). I’m pregnant again, don’t know the sex yet, but looking for any boy names with a similar vibe but a bit more palatable. I like traditional/biblical names like Joseph, Thomas, Daniel FYI. Any suggestions…?

I have taught two little Alans in recent years so perhaps it is making a comeback.

I like Douglas, Lawrence, Joe and David.

Oh yes David is lovely

loriat · 27/08/2025 21:26

Alan is rather beautiful, perhaps because I know a couple of lovely older Alans, so have good associations. But honestly don’t think you can go wrong with David or Michael, ageless classics imo.

(I know a primary school aged Keith!)

I think you must be on the wind up here 😅.. come on, Roger ? There's no way you're being serious! I like a silly sense of humour though, so I won't knock you for it 😜

Norman is actually quite a nice name if you take any prejudice out of how we've come to hear it/associate it. It's on the same lines as Warren, Rowan, Saxon etc etc. quite a strong name. Yep, I'd bring it back !

Roger (I don't know how it was ever allowed to be released let alone bought bloody back !)

Clive

Alan could work. I think Allen is a nicer sound. Not my favourite name for a revival, but there's been worse.

NormasArse · 27/08/2025 22:50

I prefer Roger to Alan. In fact, I think it’s a nice name.

BertieBotts · 27/08/2025 22:53

Frederick has actually grown on me, DS3 has a little friend with the name and it is quite cute :D

I also think Alfred is nice because it can be shortened to Fred or Alfie, and the meaning is the leader of the Elves which I thought was brilliant.

I also like the old spelling Aelfred but that might be a bit TOO old school.

Surely not ? I can only see a 70 yr old man with square steel Framed glasses, a big nose and a large chip on his shoulder 😅

It's the whole "give you a good rogering" thing too.

DollyMixers · 27/08/2025 23:00

Edward
Peter (one of my personal faves!)
Eric
Andrew (Love the nickname Andy!)
Christopher (could be Kit)
Laurence

I might be biased because my lovely dad is called Roger.

There is also a beautiful toddler called Roger at my nursery.

Whoops 🤭 sorry. I'm sure your dad is a wonderful example of a Roger 😁

Perhaps it'll have it's turn again. Stranger things have happened. Who would have thought Ivy and Florence and Daisy etc would have had a revival.

I've always liked John and wanted it for my son but was vetoed. I've warmed to Stephen. It's a family name. It is old and in the Bible. What about Adam?
