Are you Cornish or do you have Cornish links? I know a few older women with the name, but they are all from Cornwall and live down here.
if not, your child will be haunted by people asking about Cornish links IME.
Also - I’ve not checked - but what does it mean?

Kind of links, not strong. It's a name of a place in Cornwall.

It's a nope from me.

Lovely, if the child is Cornish or has Cornish connections.

Otherwise it's a bit like you've just taken it from the TV.

It's strange. People take names from all over. But never get asked this. Cornwall is in England. Yet people call their kids names like Gwen, Frieda, Amy, Lukas, Clara but people don't mention it?

It's a nope from me.

For what reason?

Are you mid pregnancy? I came up with some really bonkers names then. My teens eye roll
in horror at what they were nearly called.

So is Doublebois but doesn't make it a sensible baby name choice!

I think outside of Cornwall people will automatically link it to the TV. Fine, if that's what you want.

If you live here, or are connected, the Demelzas we know we simply link to having a VERY cornish name.

I think it’s cool, unique, and names with a ‘z’ are fun.

They are, aren't they? Why are they? I wanted names with Z in for DC but DH didn't.

It’s a child hospice round here, so definitely not if you live in the south east

CagneyNYPD1 · 14/08/2025 07:21

I like the name Demelza but in London/South East, it is the name of a charity that provides hospice care for children. So for that reason, it would be a no from me. Sadly, as I do like the name and I’m a Poldark fan.

I’m in Kent and that’s what I immediately thought of.

Nope

Moreteaandchocolate · 14/08/2025 07:28

My first reaction was that I don’t like it - not sure why - it sounds a bit dated and witchy. But it could grow on me and Demi for short is lovely.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 14/08/2025 07:29

My immediate thoughts was the childrens hospice but maybe that is kent specific.

taxidriver · 14/08/2025 07:29

demelza house is what springs to mind
or demelza charity

Jewelanemone · 14/08/2025 07:31

I love it, reminds me of Cornwall! 🙂 I also like Merryn.

taxidriver · 14/08/2025 07:31

i guess it depends where you live op

Berlinlover · 14/08/2025 07:34

It makes me think of dementia and a witch. Awful name.

Because its relatively rare, even down here.

Possibly because it doesn't really have a link to a meaning, just to a Fort.

But if you love it, go ahead. I know 2 Demelzas. One well and she's a lovely little girl - so I tend to associate it with her, and it's all positive.

TheaBrandt1 · 14/08/2025 08:04

Agree about demented witch vibes not the feel most would want for a gorgeous newborn!

Another Cornish name is Kerenza knew one but she was utterly bonkers as an adult.

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/08/2025 08:09

I prefer Carenza/Kerenza. It was actually on our shortlist for DS had he been a girl. We have no connection to Cornwall, but I liked the name when we used to watch Time Team and it was the name of one of the archaeologists.

Dippythedino · 14/08/2025 08:09

There is a children's hospice near me called Demelza's Children's Hospice so it's a no from me.

My favourite name of the moment is Azalea.
