I find it so hard to love names. I'm not sure I've ever found a name that I think is just right. Sometimes I go through phases of loving a name and then I'm like, what the heck was I thinking.

I love Ida and Wren but they don't go with surname. I love Hazel but it was the name of a mean relative. I love Iris but too popular.

So here are the names at the top of my list, the ones that work and that I like the most, but still have minor concerns about. They are ordered from most likely to use to least.

Cora (I love the greek origin and go through phases of loving this name, but then decide I don't like the ‘core’ sound. partner loves it tho which makes me want to use it)
Willa (too close to the mega popular Willow?)
Alma (too fusty?)
Nina (so warm and lovely, but is it too simple/boring?)
Rosa (On some people I think this is a beautiful, soulful name.. On others I think it sounds a bit prissy? No offence!! I can't explain it well)

What do you think of these and do you agree with my concerns or not? Are any of them super common where you live?

Nina is my favourite

Hazel is probably a lot more popular than you realise (90th most popular name for England & wales)

dnadiscoveryquery · 20/07/2025 10:54

Nina is my favourite too.

tarheelbaby · 20/07/2025 10:58

Many of these are nice.
Cora = maiden/young girl in Greek
Willa - I knew one; twas short for Wilhelmina
Alma - Latin for loving, dear (alma mater); location of the first major battle in the Crimean war ...
Nina - Spanish for little one, often a short form of another name
Rosa - rose, obvs., a beautiful flower.

MissyB1 · 20/07/2025 11:05

Alma and Nina are beautiful, I also love Hazel. I don't think Iris is too popular, not where I live anyway.
Other suggestions ;
Clara
Anna
Alice
Fern
Faye
Rhiannon or Rhian

ChocolateGanache · 20/07/2025 11:08

Love Hazel but get why you can’t use it.
Willa makes me think of Willies - soz.
Nina is cute.
Cora - it sounds a bit harsh to me.
Alma is cute
Rosa - is a bit meh

Bea (Beatrice)
Delilah - Lila

Tilda (Matilda)

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/07/2025 11:27

I love Cora, and don’t see anything wrong with the core sound. Cara maybe, if the core bit bothers you?

Willa - agree with your concerns, and sounds similar to Willy in some accents

Alma - ok, not overused and fits with current naming trends

Nina - lovely - not simple or boring and you don’t meet many

Rosa - lovely - not prissy to me, but lots of Rose based names around (Rose / Rosie etc) if that bothers you?

I would pick Cora, Nina or Rosa.

I like Cora and Nina on your list. What about Iona or Nora?

BeMellowAquaSquid · 20/07/2025 12:01

I asked my 14 year old hypothetically what sort of names do you like for baby girls and she said Julie. All of your suggestions are lovely I quite like Nora at the moment not that I’ll ever have another baby at 45!

Forgottenmyphone · 20/07/2025 12:03

I’m not keen on Nina and I know a couple of young children called Rosa, so I think that’s the most popular from your list.

I love Nina, Alma and Iris

Cora - OK but I always think of apple cores
Willa - seems unfinished to me
Hazel - nice but very popular
Ida - nice

Wren - I can’t understand why anyone would use this as a name, personally
Rosa - I love Rose but don’t like Rosa

Ideas:
Nora
Cleo
Josephine (Josie/Posy)
Winnie

Thanks all for your suggestions :) Now I'm feeling Nina, Alma and Iris a bit more.. I'm so fickle haha. I just feel like they're warmer than Cora.

I'm surprised by the consensus that Iris isn't overly popular! I thought it was becoming overused, but if not, that's great!

Sunshineismyfavourite · 20/07/2025 13:52

If you like Rosa you may like Rosanna? Alma makes me think of 1980s Coronation Street. I don't like Nina and Iris is quite common due to in part I think the Goo Goo Dolls song, I like the name though.

SevenTwoEight · 20/07/2025 13:53

Beautiful names. I love Nina. I don’t know any one young or old who is an Iris.

Amal
Zara
Cleo
Ellie
Kaia
Florence
Anna

NuffSaidSam · 20/07/2025 14:00

Cora - I know what you mean about the 'core' sound, although I also quite like it.

Willa - not keen personally, feels a bit unfinished.

Alma - this just makes me think of Coronation Street so not for me.

Nina - I love it although I'm a bit put off by it's proximity to the sound of an ambulance/police car (nee-naa)

Rosa - I'm not keen, but I don't really know why.

I don't know any Iris's if that helps, but I know LOADS of Ivy's and Isla's and I think Iris and Ida will become more popular once all the 'I like Ivy/Isla but it's too popular' people switch over to Iris/Ida.

Some suggestions:

Juno
Anna
Riley
Coralie
Robyn
Jude
Nell (I'd have it short for either Penelope or Elizabeth).

Duckies · 20/07/2025 14:03

Nina is a winner

BootballJoy · 20/07/2025 15:41

I'd go for Nina or Rosa.

Steelworks · 20/07/2025 15:47

Cora - Corinne? Corina?
Willa - ok, Willow - popular for babies and dogs
Alma - not to my taste
Nina - ok
Rosa - Rose names are v v popular- Rose, Rosie, et - Rosalie/Rosemund/Roselind as alternative, with nn Rosa?

Suggestions-
Lucy
Robyn
Polly
Daisy
Betty
Jasmine
Betsy
Tilly
Freya
Grace
Lily

TomatoSandwiches · 20/07/2025 15:50

Mila suits your list i think.

NazeLife · 20/07/2025 15:53

I am not a massive fan of Willa, but like Willow, who knows why. Also not a massive fan of Alma but think this comes from Malory Towers or St Clares, whichever one had Alma Pudden.
Cara instead of Cora?
Iris is very pretty, Nina and Rosa are nice
You seem to like retro but not Victorian names, maybe 30s/40s? I'd go through Enid Blyton's school books for inspiration!
Belinda, Daphne?

gossipgossipgossip · 20/07/2025 15:54

Love all of them except willa

ivy
evie
matilda/tilly
clementine
Delilah

marshmallowfinder · 20/07/2025 16:00

Cora just reminds me of a corer.
Nina is beautiful, as is the Welsh Nia.
Willa will become willy.
Alma is v frumpy to me.
Rosa is OK but a bit boring.

I love Hazel. How about Bryony, Tamsin, Cassia, Rosalind or Cara?
