Thoughts on the baby name Tilda?

Hi all,

I’m expecting and have been going round and round with names, but I keep coming back to Tilda. It’s the shortened version of a nickname my grandfather gave me throughout my life, it’s always had such a warm, personal meaning for me. I feel really connected to it in a way no other name has matched.

I guess I’m just wondering how people perceive the name? Do you see it as too old-fashioned, incomplete, or quirky? I want to go with what feels right, but I’d love to hear how others might react to it, especially in real life settings.

Thanks in advance ❤️

I think of the rice brand then Tilda Swinton.

Personally I’d go for Matilda nickname Tilda

Kamek · 09/07/2025 18:52

Basmati rice!

SleepingStandingUp · 09/07/2025 18:53

Swinton then rice.

I'd go with Matilda and then shorten to Tilda or Tilly

Zapx · 09/07/2025 18:53

It’s sounds to me identical to tilde - the keyboard key with the squiggly line ~. So for that reason I’d avoid it…
Sorry.

GoldenRosebee · 09/07/2025 18:54

Matilda nn Tilda is nicer, but if you're only using Tilda, then use Tilda.
I prefer Matilda much more, but Tilda is fine. Apparently it means sparkle in swedish.

One of my children has a friend called Matilda but called Tilda and always has been.

I really like it! Personally I’d do Matilda, but if you prefer Tilda that’s not a problem at all. Tilda Swinton isn’t a bad person to be associated with at all, and her generation probably won’t know her much. And as for the rice - being associated with a brand doesn’t hurt any little Zara’s.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 09/07/2025 19:24

Just think of rice.

Steelworks · 09/07/2025 19:24

Thought if rice also. (Sorry)

marshmallowfinder · 09/07/2025 19:24

Rice. I dislike it I'm afraid.

Lafufufu · 09/07/2025 19:26

That its short for matilda (which is a nice name!)

If its actually tilda I think of a bag of rice (sorry)

TourdeFrance2025 · 09/07/2025 19:27

Definitely rice.

Matilda on BC.

aGirlLikeJesamine · 09/07/2025 19:28

tilda swinton
so a no from me

Cherrysherbet · 09/07/2025 19:29

I really like it

ModerateOrGoodOccasionallyPoor · 09/07/2025 19:30

It's nice. But I'd call her Matilda and shorten it to Tilda if you like.

Neveranynamesleft · 09/07/2025 19:32

No. Rice, as you are probably aware, which is why you're asking.

Knittedfairies2 · 09/07/2025 19:32

Well I like it; it has a deep meaning for you, so use it. ( It doesn't say rice or an actress to me, but reminds me of Tilda fabrics, if anything)

Love Tilda 🙌 , loads of people going on about Rice 🙄
Ben is a nice name , uncle Ben’s rice , don’t think of rice though , when I hear the name Ben !
Freya is a lovely name ( brand of underwear) yet bras don’t spring to mind when I hear the name !

tartyflette · 09/07/2025 19:38

The name Matilda is lovely as it is and can also be shortened in two or three different ways, Tilda as you said but also Tilly or Tillie, and Mattie.
All are good names and would give your family, and importantly your DD, a choice as to how they would like to be called as an older child, teenager or adult.

MsMiniver · 09/07/2025 19:38

It’s lovely! I would have had that on my list for DD if I’d thought of it. Also you have a meaningful connection to it. I think it’s simple, timeless and classy.
