Ludo?

Due later this year with a boy and have NO idea what to call him!

We love Ludo but saw someone’s dog was called Ludo and now can’t help but think of it as a dogs name?

Also love Harrison but my DH knows a Harrison who was a bully at school so he can’t come around to it.

I love Ralph but not sure it hits the spot…

Also love the name Joss but can’t use it!

Hit me with any and all suggestions!!

Beyond dreadful. You might as well call him Tiddlywinks or Cluedo. Ralph is very nice. Go with that.

songbird3086 · 11/06/2025 13:59

I called my son Milo and everyone said that was a dog or cat or drink! I didn’t care and I’ve never regretted it. Much more people praise it than say negatives

TomatoSandwiches · 11/06/2025 14:11

Please consider Painter, I'm not having anymore children so I can't use it.

peanutbuttertoasty · 11/06/2025 14:14

In my mind Ralph will always be a penis. Unless pronounced Rafe. Rafe is nice

Never mind the dogs’ name.

This says it all.

I know a Ludo, but his real name is Ludovic. I think it's great, as long as Ludo is the short version of a proper human name.

summerscomingsoon · 11/06/2025 14:39

Unless you are of Dutch/Slavic heritage then no. it's a dogs name or a board game

Poonu · 11/06/2025 14:41

No thanks

Username2151 · 11/06/2025 18:49

Is Ludo short for Ludwig I wonder?
Maybe an independent name...
I've never heard the name but it's your choice, and no one else's business but your own.
Your DS might get 'Lou' or Lude' for short.

Flyhigher · 11/06/2025 19:50

No to Ludo. Like Harrison and Ralph

AnneMarieW · 11/06/2025 20:20

Yep, 2nd those who say that for many people it’s famously the very friendly, shaggy furred, gigantic but not terribly bright beast in popular cult classic film Labyrinth. Hence probably why it’s a popular dog name as those characteristics are very canine! And to be fair it’s a pleasant sounding name too.

I think you could probably get away with Ludo if your son’s social set would be all Monty, Digby type quirky, uncommon names as then it’s not going to stand out so much. But if he’s going to be at the small village school/local comp where all the boys are Alfie, Noah etc then he might grow to dislike it.

Sorry I’m not that keen on any of your choices as I’m mostly as very classic/traditional namer…. Maybe Ivo instead of Ludo? Heath instead of Ralph? Sullivan instead of Harrison? Maxim instead of Joss? Those are still uncommon but nicer sounding imo.

I think Ludo is traditionally short for Ludovic (Ludwig might be a variant). Which is nice but would be quite exotic/unusual sounding in UK.

Gattopardo · 11/06/2025 22:23

Ludo sounds incredibly posho to me.

see also Cosmo, Otto, Gus, Orlando, Cassius, Caius.

How about Fergus? Similar strong unusual name but less laden with class connotations.

Branleuse · 11/06/2025 22:25

I know of a Ludo. A friends grandkid. I really like the name

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 11/06/2025 22:27

I have a Joss ☺️ great taste.

I like the sound of Ludo but it’s just way too posh and the dog connotations put me off.

Harrison is other end of spectrum to Ludo imo but I like it and it seems friendly.

Rory
Oscar
Dylan
Max
Grayson?

PoppyHill123 · 11/06/2025 22:30

Ludo means "crazy" or "a crazy man" in some Slavic languages. I could never get passed that lol!
Congrats OP and good luck!

monktasmic · 12/06/2025 07:55

I know a Ludo (short for Ludovic) he’s a loon.
i like the name though.
I like Monty, Digby, Laurie (Laurence) I met a little Florian recently.

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 12/06/2025 11:05

Love Ludo - one of my favourite names. And I like the longer names it might be derived from. So I’d happily use it.

Mungo
Guy
Ruairi
Hector
Fabian
Lorne

rainbowstardrops · 12/06/2025 11:10

Can I be red please?
Sorry, the board game was the first thing I thought of!

I love Jude , Xavier, Xander, Isaac

maddiemookins16mum · 12/06/2025 11:11

Ralph is a great name.

YellowPostIts · 12/06/2025 11:11

I’m clearly a child of the 80s! I came here to say “Ludo and rocks are friends” and that Judy Blum ruined the name Ralph but I see everyone else has beaten me to it!

Ludo was the best character though !

GiddyCrab · 12/06/2025 23:43

Prince William had a dog called Ludo. Great dogs name.

Mydadsbirthday · 13/06/2025 12:20

I think Ludo is good, but you need a longer name to shorten so Ludovic. I knew a girl called Ludovica who also went by Ludo.

IIRC Prince William dog was Lupo, not Ludo. (Random useless royal fact)

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 14/06/2025 10:00

I quite like Ludo but I’d go for Ludovic for full, might as well go for it

Rafe is much nicer than Ralph, Harrison will date badly

Names that are a bit Joss like to me

Luke
Nate (Nathaniel)
Gabe (Gabriel)
Kes (Kester/Christopher)
Blaise
Dashiell - Dash
Abe / Bram (Abraham)
Seth

Ralph is a great name.

See to me it’s like a small dog yapping. It’s so subjective..
