Help!! I cannot name my son!!

I’m having an awful time trying to choose my son’s name (he’s here already). In my list are Rowan, Roman, Rhys/Reece, Rian, Reagan, Mason, Jayden, Jamie and Corey. Problem is right now he suits Corey, but I’m also aware he won’t look cute forever and am conscious of choosing a strong name that will see him through his later years, which my daughters will. With a boy, I feel like I want his name to portray strength, handsome & cool, which is asking a lot. From searches I’ve realised I’m more drawn to soft names and gender neutral names for boys.

I’d love something unusual like my daughter’s name but with boys I just can’t seem to find that. As my daughter’s name is 3 syllables, I’d ideally like at least 2 or long sounding name eg Rhys.

can anyone share their thoughts on my list and perhaps share any other names they think I might love….

boys names are harrrrrrddddd!

Jamie
Rowan

The others seem a bit 'unaspirational':
Rhys - use Reece if not Welsh
Rian - fine if you are Irish
Roman - maybe if you are Polish
Reagan - 1980s US president
Mason - too similar to May
Jayden- Jayden is dated already
Corey - doesn't seem like a name

My favourite boys name atm is Colter.
Been watching a TV series, he is the main character. It rolls nicely off the tongue.

boxtop · 30/05/2025 10:38

I think you're overthinking this. You're Irish! Literally the home of boys names that fit the bill.

Oisín, Sean, Conor, Feargal, Lorcan...

Rowan - Rowan Atkinson...awful
Roman - nice
Rhys/Reece - ok
Rian - Do you mean Ryan?
Reagan, Mason, Jayden, Jamie and Corey - Chav-tastic.

I like:
Jude, Alexander, Max, Jacob, Joshua, Arlo, Milo, Theo

Rian is an Irish name. It's not the same as Ryan. It's pronounced Reen.

I’d choose Rowan, Reece/Rhys or Jamie. I think they’re good names that will age well as he grows up.

Ultimately it’s up to you and you still have time, maybe try calling him one of the names each day and she which sticks.

Ah ok...

Maero · 30/05/2025 10:50

@boxtop while we are Irish, we are from the North and in a mixed marriage (makes things a little more complicated), so there’s certain names we’d be okay with and some we wouldn’t. As lovely as those are, unfortunately, here they would label him as 1 religion, which we don’t really want for him. We’d rather our kids make their own choices in life. I do love them though 🫠

Logan
Lorcan
Brogan
Daryll
Declan
Theodore (Teddy, Theo)
Cooper
Gregory
Christopher

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 10:55

@eqpi4t2hbsnktd , Rhys is Welsh and not pronounced Reece. The Welsh version is classy, the 'Rees' version isn't.

Whatissleep12 · 30/05/2025 11:01

Go for Corey, it's not too cutesy at all amd works for adults. Otherwise I love Roman too from your list and Jamie. I would also throw Owen in the hat (DD would have been Owen)

ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan · 30/05/2025 11:02

Xavier is a very strong and classy name, none of your list apart from Roman are to my taste.

Rowan.
Please not Jayden.

Ruuuude - my 14 year old is called Jayden and at the time I had never heard of it - or people making fun of it 😄 🤣
I still do love it though so it's aged well in my house at least! X

GalaxyWasOnOffer · 30/05/2025 11:14

I far prefer classical names so I’d immediately strike Reagan, Mason, Jayden & Corey from the list. I’m old enough to remember the two Coreys but really, these will all date very badly in coming years.

I know what feels like hundreds of boys called Rhys/Reece, Rowan & Roman (along with Reuben) so those would be a no too

Jamie is lovely, with James on the birth certificate. Strong & timeless.

I know several Jayden's (various spellings) all aged around 15-20.
No one has ever said anything about the name.
Mumsnet is often far too snobby.

Strawberriesforever · 30/05/2025 11:21

I like Rhys and Rowan.

Narwhalsh · 30/05/2025 11:32

Rhydian is 3 syllables, fairly unusual (very outside of wales) and I think a strong name

I have a Rowan-it’s a great name 😀

Viviennemary · 30/05/2025 11:35

Not keen of any of your names but they aren't awful. Not Jayden though. Somebody suggested Rory. That's OK.

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 11:43

@Needmorelego , A friend has a Jayden, and I'd not voice my opinion publicly, but Jayden is in his mid to late-teens, has young parents, parents have decent jobs (tradesperson/retail mgmt), parents no longer together but both in HA flats. Jayden likely to become a tradesperson etc.

It's not in any way a criticism of the parents or of young Jayden, who's a nice lad, but that's probably my profile of the name.

somejust · 30/05/2025 12:20

Rohan (Ro-han) is nice tbf. A mix of hard (Ro) and soft (han). Do you like Isaac? I always think of that as a kind of a soft/hard name.

JaneJeffer · 30/05/2025 12:29

Maero · 30/05/2025 09:38

@JaneJeffer I went to school with a Ruairi (pronounced Rory) and only lately I wondered why someone would name their child that…all I hear is Roar (and I’m from Ireland, so I should technically love it)

I love the name Rory ever since I watched Pierce Brosnan play Rory O’Manion at an impressionable age 🔥

Lala87 · 29/05/2025 22:58

I've heard Corey being used as slang for todger

In that case, there's a long list of un usable names!

Corey is a fine name. His future workmates will all have names with a similar vibe

Maero · 30/05/2025 09:59

@Andoutcomethewolves an you share how they pronounce Rohan please?

Similar to Rowan but with the h clearly pronounced - Ro-han.

If you like Darragh the one I know has siblings Colm and Eoin - any good?
