Sister for Isla?

We’re expecting a baby girl and finding it so hard to feel inspired by names. We had a few ideas for boys that we loved! But we’re having a girl lol

I’m not looking for anything too unusual but ideally not overused either. I know I already have an Isla which is popular (however the name is just so beautiful and I have only met 1 other in 3 years!) so some similar styles to that please :)

Names from our shortlist so far to give you an idea of what we like… (I know no name will please everyone)

  • Imogen - I love this and would probably be my number one choice but OH hates it
  • Amelia - far too overused?
  • Mia - I know this is still very popular but not quite as high on the lists as Amelia and it’s one we agree on so probably the front runner so far
  • Freya - OH loves this, I like it but probably wouldn’t be my first choice
  • Edie - both agree on this and I like that it’s less common but not sure it’s ‘pretty’ sounding enough
  • Lula - our wildcare choice. Again like that it’s not as common, this was actually on our shortlist for our eldest but OH said the other day it sounds like a cartoon character and now I can’t get that out of my head lol

Also like Lily but this got used by someone else in the family so it’s a no go for us

New ideas much appreciated feel like I’m going over the same list

Isla and Lula are far too close imo.

From your list, I like Edie and Freya. I think they're both lovely and would go well with Isla.

Mia is beautiful, I think that’s a great first choice.

Freya is the only one I really like (aside from Imogen).

I think Lula is too close to Isla, you'd get confused shouting them together, and don't love it as a name. I think it would be better to go for the longer version of Tallulah if you like the sound. Mia is lovely.

I know it's hard but try not to worry about popularity. I've got an 18 month old, haven't met a Mia at any baby classes or nursery, but there has been multiple Edies, so you just never know.

  • Imogen - I love this too
  • Amelia - loads of nn options so it doesn’t feel as overused as it is - Mia, Milly, Amie, Lia etc
  • Mia - goes so well with Isla
  • Freya - I love this
  • Edie - I like it
  • Lula - not my favourite and similar to Isla
I’d pick Mia or Freya.

Also I should have added are Isla and Lula too similar sounding for siblings with the double syllable ‘la’ ending?

I like Isla but with Lulu it changes and sounds like a striptease act. 👯‍♀️

I love Edie and think they sit perfectly together.

LadyQuackBeth · 23/05/2025 13:14

Matilda has overlap with a lot of your choices, even NN Tilly sounds like Lily, but is okay for cousins.

SabrinaThwaite · 23/05/2025 13:37

I was also going to suggest Eilidh.

If you don’t want overused then I wouldn’t use any of them other then Edie or Lula.

Zezet · 23/05/2025 14:08

Isla and Aoife!

Firsttimebabymummy · 23/05/2025 14:54

Freya first came to mind before I saw it on your list. I think it's a gorgeous name and goes nicely.

anon4net · 23/05/2025 16:10

If it was me, I wouldn't choose a name that ended with another a sound. Of your list I think Edie, followed Imogen, go best with Isla. I love many others listed but they don't go as well with Isla.

What about...

Isla and Grace - They sound lovely together.
Isla and Wren
Isla and Rose
Isla and Eleanor
Isla and Mirabelle
Isla and Jess
Isla and Claire (though i think this version is better if Claire is the eldest - Claire & Isla has a better ring)
Isla and Ottalie/Ottilie
Isla and Abigail
Isla and Quinn
Isla and Penny

So many lovely choices of names. It's almost what makes it a harder choice.

Melsy88 · 23/05/2025 16:45

Emmeline
Emma
Florence

Cocktailsandcheese · 23/05/2025 16:47

I think Freya goes really nicely, that'd probably be my choice. Followed by Mia which is also lovely.

Timeandtune · 23/05/2025 16:49

I would suggest Iona Goes well IMO.

Seventimesaday · 23/05/2025 16:50

I like Freya best.
how about

Are you Scottish? If so, Iona, to keep the Scottish island theme going. Or Jura, which is another island.
