What would you think if you heard this name called out to a child in the park?

Oden.
This isn't actually my ds' name but his younger brother couldn't say his name and ended up calling him this and its turned into a very frequently used nick name for him by all of us. After reading some of the threads where unknown parent have been judged for what they shout across the supermarket to their children i wondered what reception the name 'Oden' would get? (I wont be offended whatever you say)

My first thought was scandinavian child.

I would not have any chavvy associations. Would lean towards posh kid if thought about it but not in a negative way. I quite like it.

That was my gut reaction without thinking too much.

NotQuiteCockney · 18/05/2008 21:03

I would think it was a cool name.

I don't think Scandi people go around calling their kids by the names of ancient Norse gods, do they?

tearinghairout · 18/05/2008 21:18

I would think it was Odin (sorry, have escaped from Pedants' Corner) and also either Scandinavian and/or posh in a Tarquin kind of way.

OTOH an awful lot does depend on who's doing the shouting, on whether she's a Yummy Mummy - "Odin darling, come along, you'll be late for your Mandarin class"
or she's a 20-stone version of Amy Winehouse (with the tattoes)and yells "ODIIIIIN!! Gerrover 'ere NAH before I knock your f**ckin' block off!!!" across the park then that might not sound so Scandinavian or Tarquin-esque.

NaughtyNigella · 18/05/2008 21:21

Odin - good name.

LittleBella · 18/05/2008 21:23

I would think you were a confused pagan

NotQuiteCockney · 18/05/2008 21:26

LOL at 'confused pagan'.

I understand about the strange variations, DS1 was 'Mas' for ages, because DS2 couldn't pronounce his real name.

YouWillBeDeleted · 18/05/2008 21:31

Lol I'm definately not a yummy mummy or a scummy mummy - more like your average run of the mill slightly worn out but surviving mummy.
I love the name and wish i'd used it for his christian name. Even Oden gets shortened to Odee though!

QuintessentialShadows · 18/05/2008 21:35

I know an Odin. Very nice and strong name. It is a God after all!

Nancy66 · 18/05/2008 21:54

I would think you named him after a cinema chain

YouWillBeDeleted · 19/05/2008 09:32

I did once know a Great Dane dog called Odin.

Amandella · 19/05/2008 09:39

I quite like Oden - sounds unusual but not too unusual. Nice!

merryberry · 19/05/2008 09:45

i'd duck reflexively in case of thunderbolts hurled from on high

TheFallenMadonna · 19/05/2008 09:47

I used to teach a boy called Odin. He wasn't posh, and his mother wasn't pretentious. He was smashing.

tarantula · 19/05/2008 09:52

I like Odin. Would think eihter scandinavian or pagan or interested in Norse mythology or a viking reenactor. Would probably stike up a conversation out of interest tbh.

YouWillBeDeleted · 19/05/2008 11:39

I really wish i'd named him Oden now. Oh well, there is always next time!

Is his real name Boden?

seeker · 19/05/2008 11:46

My children call each other Matmic and Dace - from ds's first attempts at saying their names, so Oden seems quite normal to me!

seeker · 19/05/2008 11:46

And, actually, for the same reason my friend's little boy is usually called Ozver!

Alishanty · 19/05/2008 12:36

I would think of the scandinavian god and quite like it. It's unusual without being too 'out there'.

Chandon · 19/05/2008 18:04

so what´s his real name, Owen?

Oden sounds quite Boden to me.

YouWillBeDeleted · 19/05/2008 18:42

His real name is just a traditional boring boys name, nothing whatsoever like Oden so don't know how his brother came up with it!
