I don't understand how cre could be pronounced as ker?

How do you say acre?

Ilovemyshed · 19/04/2025 11:56

Its a surname

I don't understand how cre could be pronounced as ker?

In just the same way that the word "acre" is pronounced "ay-ker" (ish).

OP, this is a terrible name. It strikes me that you're just trying too hard to be different! There are so many lovely names out there, throw this one back into the pond and pick another!

DoYouReally · 19/04/2025 12:19

The poor child will spend the next 80-90 years of their life "saying yes, pronounced like acre with a d" multiple times a week.

That's not fair.

Like ‘acre’, ‘mediocre’ and ‘lucre’?

EcruCardigan · 19/04/2025 13:11

@SeventeenClovesOfGarlic , acre is pronounced Ayker, sabre is say-ber, Ochre is oak-er, mitre is my-ter, ....

I just know it as a village in North Yorkshire, but I suppose some people names are place names too!

And for me, a village in the northern Lake District. TBH I thought this was going to be about pub recommendations till I saw where it was posted.

In my head, I read it as Dak-ree,(similar to daiquiri) before you'd spelt out how you pronounce it.

Its certainly different, but a life long of spelling it out and correcting people.

Second this.

ZenNudist · 19/04/2025 14:30

I'm one of the few saying yes. I remember a girl at school had a brother called Dacre. There was a place by the same name. I don't like it but I at least recognise it as a name.

Sheeparelooseagain · 19/04/2025 14:31

It's a surname and quite a common surname around here.

SwedishEdith · 19/04/2025 14:33

This is concrete evidence of bots generating content. The Daily Mail trying to rehabilitate the name Dacre.

Dolamroth · 19/04/2025 14:34

I'm from North Yorkshire so I just thought of Dacre Banks the village.

Snorlaxo · 19/04/2025 14:51

I assumed it was pronounced Da-ka

You will spend your life saying “Acre with a D”

If it’s after the Stranger Things actor then I would argue that his career hasn’t taken off enough for people to know how to pronounce it.

Talltreesbythelake · 19/04/2025 16:23

It's an old family name for me. Why shouldn't it could come back? I never thought Reggie or Ivy would happen, but here we are.

uhOhOP · 19/04/2025 16:28

I'm also surprised that people seem to be stumped by the pronunciation of the name.

bnmshortcut · 19/04/2025 16:39

I’m not a huge fan personally but I don’t think it’s a bad name

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 19/04/2025 16:55

It’s the name of a popular vet near me

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 19/04/2025 16:59

Surely a troll thread?

loobylou10 · 19/04/2025 17:01

Dacres is an estate agent where I live, so no

Climbinghigher · 19/04/2025 17:04

NineLivesKat · 19/04/2025 10:35

Came here to say this!

Me too

Surely a troll thread?

Why?

notimagain · 19/04/2025 17:06

I've known it used as a first name but maybe not recently.

BernardButlersBra · 19/04/2025 17:11

Makes me think of the concentration camp Dachau

Obvnotthegolden · 19/04/2025 17:13

I like it! I like the pronunciation of it but not the spelling of it. Could you spell it the way you pronounce ie Dayker?

It's already an unusual spelling and it limits the issue with questionable pronunciation.

PLHJ84 · 19/04/2025 17:26

I’d say it as Dak-Ray which i actually think is nicer than Day-Ker which will sound like day care. They’ll have a life time of correcting people and spelling it out.
