Felix or Fraser for baby boy

Eliottw · 10/04/2025 15:14

We can't decide between Felix or Fraser for our baby boy. Which should we go for?

Felix - we really like the name, and love the fact that it means lucky/happy. Also like that it can't really be shortened. But we're worried about the cat association. Also, does it sound a bit 'try hard' posh?

Fraser - we really like the name. We feel it might be odd for us to call him this as we have no links at all to Scotland. Also, we're slightly worried about it being spelt Frazer or being pronounced Frasier. Also, wondered if it's likely this would get shortened to 'Fraz' as a nickname (which we don't really like).

Thoughts?

Felix - like the sound much more than Fraser, although both are nice.

PiastriThePastry · 10/04/2025 15:18

I’m 10000% team Fraser… but you will get idiots people saying Frasier 🤢 regularly ime!

LoudPlumDog · 10/04/2025 15:19

One hundred percent Fraser.

Felix is a cats name.

faerietales · 10/04/2025 15:22

Felix just makes me think of cat food, but not a massive fan of Fraser either, I have to say.

I would go with Frederick nn. Freddie.

AllPlayedOut · 10/04/2025 15:23

Felix is much nicer than Fraser which I strongly dislike.

SmoothEncounter · 10/04/2025 15:33

Fraser is a good strong name and you don’t have to be Scottish to use it, there are Frasers - both first name and clan surname - all around the world.

Felix is cat food. No.

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/04/2025 16:18

Both are nice - I slightly prefer Fraser.

Brother is a Fraser.

Yes to the Frasier, yes to the Frazer mis-spelling.
Yes to one particularly dreadful teenage period where he adopted the nickname Fraz

Sorry.

Reddelilah · 10/04/2025 17:54

Definitely Fraser!

Felix is a well known cat food brand in the UK 🐈

Emanwenym · 10/04/2025 19:54

Agree about the Fras, Fra, Frasier and Frasier but I prefer it to Felix.

Which goes best with the surname?
Something like Felix Cox might be unfortunate.

ScentOfAMoomin · 10/04/2025 20:08

I couldn’t choose as they are both fab names - sorry, not helpful.

AliBaliBee1234 · 10/04/2025 20:24

Know a Felix from baby class and really love it

Theblueduck · 10/04/2025 21:13

I’m quite fond of both and don’t think you can go far wrong with either of these.

I work with a Fraser and he gets called Faz by everyone, If that helps.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/04/2025 21:15

Fraer is a gorgeous name. Really strong.

Fraley · 11/04/2025 03:19

My youngest son is Fraser & we’ve had no issues with
mis-spelling or with the wrong pronunciation in 21 years, also have never come across any others with the same name!

RickiRaccoon · 11/04/2025 03:50

Both are good names. I'd wait till you had baby and just pick which seems to suit him more.

Emanwenym · 11/04/2025 07:49

@Fraley , Might depend where you live. I've heard several people say 'House of Frasier' when there was a store in the high street.

LetsWatchTheFlowersGrow · 11/04/2025 07:51

Fraser

LetTheWindBlowBackYourHair · 11/04/2025 11:34

I really dislike Felix, it is and always will be a cat to me, to be honest I thought it meant cat in ancient Greek or something! But obviously I was wrong there.

Fraser is a lovely handsome name, it is likely his friends may call him Frase/Fraz for a nickname as he gets older or in adulthood, but you can always call him Fraser and always insist other people, family members etc do too.

CruCru · 11/04/2025 13:08

I like Felix better. Yes it’s a brand of cat food but Henry is a type of vacuum cleaner and there are lots of Henrys.

If you choose Fraser, how much will it annoy you if someone spells or pronounces it Frasier?

Reddelilah · 11/04/2025 14:17

Felix cat food is displayed in every UK supermarket, whereas hoovers are not.

ItsStillWork · 11/04/2025 14:24

Either of them are great.

felix is cat food.

AllFours · 11/04/2025 14:28

Felix is cool, Fraser is wet.

(Just an opinion based on the people I know IRL with these two names!

DeciDela · 11/04/2025 14:33

People who say "Felix is a cat" are the same idiots who say "Clover is a cow", "Stella is a beer", "Flora is a margarine", "Marina is a place for boats". Meanwhile the Stellas, Clovers, Felixs, Marinas and Floras go about their business unhindered by idiocy.

If anyone reads about Felix Mendelssohn, for example, and their first thought is "hahahah that's a cat's name" then there truly is no helping them.
