Opinions on the name Noel

I posted a threat on here yesterday asking for opinions on the name piper, and I think it’s fair to say it is a very marmite name! 🤣

I am not finding out the gender of my baby, so I’m trying to pick a top girl and a top boy name for when little one is born - which is proving difficult so sorry if you see a lot of threads from me in the coming months!!!!!

I like Noel for a boy at the minute- however I don’t think I LOVE the name. I’m still waiting to find a name that wows me. What’s everyone’s opinion on Noel?

My name is Holly and I’m not sure is a Noel and Holly is too Christmassy / cringe (baby is due in August ) I haven’t picked it for any theme sort of reason and I’m not sure if people will automatically assume that I have?

I can't get the first Noel carol out of my head now and I definitely wouldn't use it with Holly.

MistyF · 19/03/2025 16:58

How about Noel in reverse - Leon? It's ancient Greek version of Leo. Is you baby due in constellation of Leo?
I think people might think he's born in December - irrelevant what your name is.
And how do you pronounce it? Are you bothered by mispronunciations? I find name Ok, but wouldn't choose it because it's kinda religious.

alternatives
Joel
Jonah
Leon
Nash
Nathan
Ellis
Noah
Nestor
Angel
Gael
Ansel

It's one of those names like Keith or something that seems old-fashioned and unsexy. it also strongly suggests a Christmas baby. The 'Noel, Noel' type wisecracks would be a pita.

Joel is fine.

Disturbia81 · 19/03/2025 17:02

I have a nephew called Noel and we were doubtful at first but it really suits him now

BoleynMemories13 · 19/03/2025 17:11

Just reminds me of the creepy dad of Britain's largest family, who knocked his now wife up when she was just 13 and kept knocking her up pretty much every year after that for the next 22 years. He makes my skin crawl, so it's a big no from me.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 19/03/2025 17:13

I'm with you, don't hate it but don't love it.

I would assume a Noel was a Christmas baby but wouldn't think it was a big deal if he wasn't.

Holly and Noel is a bit much. I like Joel and Leon more.

CosyNavyLeader · 19/03/2025 17:52

I think it's a really ugly name. But that's just my opinion. If you like it then go for it!

RedOnyx · 19/03/2025 17:54

I don't think I'd use Noel with Holly. Also all I can think of when I hear it is Noel Edmunds. That's probably just me showing my age though.

What about Noah or Owen?

tuesdayschildish · 19/03/2025 18:19

Really like it. It occupies that sweet spot of modern sounding and classic. Noel Gallagher comes to mind and also ‘The First Noel’ carol. Both ok connotations I’d say.

SkaneTos · 19/03/2025 22:34

I think Noel is a nice name.

I should say, it makes me think about the band Oasis. I am from Sweden, and the names Noel and Liam were very very very unusual in Sweden before 1994, but with the success of Oasis they eventually both reached the Top-100 for boy names.

(Yes, I know his real name is William).

Elspet · 19/03/2025 22:36

My first thought was Edmunds, but that probably shows my age.

<Swapshop et al>

Gemini29 · 19/03/2025 22:36

I think it's 20 years too soon

Objectively it's nice but it's too connected to Edmonds

shoopshoopdedoo · 19/03/2025 22:37

I like it.

It’s much nicer than Piper!

Elspet · 19/03/2025 22:38

Sorry yes, typo, EdmOnds.

YourWinter · 19/03/2025 22:38

I don’t like it but it’s marginally better than Noah, which is ghastly.

SwedishEdith · 19/03/2025 22:41

No. I just think it's quite an ugly word to say and kind of a wet name. Can't stand Noel Gallagher so I'm definitely influenced by that.

TheSandgroper · 20/03/2025 03:11

I like Noel very much. It’s a proper grown up name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/03/2025 06:26

It’s ok, maybe a bit dated?

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/03/2025 06:27

It’s a good name

NotCamping · 20/03/2025 06:29

It’s awful. Very unattractive. I quite like Piper though(For a girl)

pearbottomjeans · 20/03/2025 06:30

It’s not my fave. Particularly not with Holly. Joel on the other hand is my fave. Always Joel!

roshi42 · 20/03/2025 06:31

Quite like it. Think of Noel Fielding.

oakl79 · 20/03/2025 06:32

Just make me think of Mr Blobby! (Showing age)
There are a lot nicer names out there.
