Classical and masculine name like Tristan

Hi there,

I'm due soon for DS2 and need a help to choose the name!
DS1 is Tristan and we want another classical and masculine name goes well with it.
Few of DH favourite names are Scandinavian. We don't have Scandinavian backgrounds though we live in Scotland, is that ok?
One more concern is if some of them are too masculine name for potential bullies as I'm quite short & skinny so the DS2 likely to be too.

This is the short list.
Edward
Leon
Marius
Thorfinn
Magnus
Lysander

How do you feel about these names? Any other suggestions?

What do you mean by ‘too masculine’? I don’t, for instance think of the name Tristan as remotely ‘masculine’. I quite like it, but no one’s going to call the macho bully in their novel Tristan.

I like Magnus most of your list. Edward is fine in a beige classic kind of way.

borntobequiet · 11/03/2025 17:16

I don’t think all of those are very masculine sounding names. Marius and Thorfinn (new to me) perhaps.

MistyF · 11/03/2025 17:16

How about Roland - from Chanson of Roland

I do like Magnus, but also like Leon and Lysander

Dollydaydream100 · 11/03/2025 17:19

Tristan really isn't a masculine name - I'd say it's a really wimpy and effeminate name tbh.

The only names in your list I'd consider more masculine are Edward and Magnus. Leon and Marius are ok. The others are awful and will make your ds a prime target for bullying.

Because for instance I searched about Magnus and some people say it's ultra masculine name hard to live with it if you are not tall. But maybe I worry too much, I think there is no perfect name everyone likes anyway!

Aldous
Amias
Atlas
Leander
Gideon
Fabian
Tobias

Tristan doesn't strike me as particularly masculine, it's quite whimsical I think. From your list Leon or Edward would go with it.

StillLifeWithEggs · 11/03/2025 17:25

OK, but that’s just because it means ‘big/great’! Yes, which might not be great if you’re not tall, aged 14. But Tristan isn’t remotely masculine, other than in the sense of being a male name, and neither is Lysander. The opposite if anything.

PhasednotFazed · 11/03/2025 17:27

I don’t think any of your names are masculine! I associate them with vaguely posh and nerdy men, apart from maybe Leon. It just goes to show how subjective this stuff is.

Don't name your child Thorfin though. Soren?

SconeCreamJam · 11/03/2025 17:31

I have a Tristan and he’s a rugby loving giant 16 year old, not at all effeminate or whimsical so you can pick any name you like and it doesn’t make a difference to how they turn out!

My faves out of your list are Leon and Marius to go with Tristan.

What about Greek or Latin names - Hector, Perseus (Percy), Alexander, Jason, Jupiter, Claudius, Leo, Maximus, Victor?

MummytoE · 11/03/2025 17:43

Tristan is classic and masculine?? Lol who knew

MadderthanMorris · 11/03/2025 17:51

Thor

Bailamosse · 11/03/2025 17:53

I wouldn’t see any of those names (inc Tristan) as masculine. Rather more as posh and even effeminate.

Ashley12345 · 11/03/2025 17:59

Thank you for honest opinions about names including Tristan! I didn't realise how different impression I had from everyone else... probably because I'm not from an English speaking country. DH was right he said Tristan has a delicate sound in it. Anyway I still love the name Tristan.

I really appreciate to know which names everyone likes and how they actually sound like.

Tristan is one of my favourite names. I also like Magnus. Thorfinn is from Orkney isn't it, I feel you would need some connection to use it.
Lysander is good. I also like:
Patrick
Sebastian
Felix
Caspian
Angus
Hamish
Jonathan
Edmund

I do agree with PP the general vibe is more Shakespearian/classical rather than overtly masculine.

I like Thorfinn and Lysander, but think they might both make for playground teasing. They are still a little unusual.

With tristan

Sebastian
Christopher
Marcus
Anthony
Alexander

LostMyLanyard · 11/03/2025 18:19

Hi OP, I LOVE the name Tristan, it's a classical name with a lovely meaning. However, in the UK (which I think you live, but are not from??) it wouldn't be seen as a masculine name. That does not mean that it's not a nice name though! 💖

Have you considered Thorsten/Torsten as a sibling name? I think they sound good together and give off a similar vibe.

Zeldasie · 11/03/2025 18:22

Of your suggestions I like Marius and Magnus.

How about

Quentin
Reuben
Darius

mathanxiety · 11/03/2025 19:19

Marius, Thorfinn, and Magnus sound silly with Tristan, imo.

I wouldn't classify Tristan as "masculine".

Nathaniel

A little unusual?? They are down right weird and verging on child abuse lmao

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/03/2025 21:34
