Opinions on the name Lara?

Thinking something like Lara Margot

I personally don’t know anybody (including babies) named Lara - I was wondering how popular it is to the general public? I don’t want to call her it thinking it’s uncommon just for her to be the 5th Lara in her class!!

Hi all!!

I appreciate all of your answers :) I just want to reiterate that I am not looking for opinions / alternatives for Margot as I am simply not bothered about popularity / other people’s opinions on her middle name. This is because it will not be used daily and I feel it is more of a personal thing!

I agree / understand the comments mentioning a slight flow issue with Lara Margot although I do not think that is a problem with our accent.

But yes, this post was purely asking for opinions on the name Lara, as before I committed to a first name I wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything horrible about the name that I was missing!

Thank you for all the love on the name Lara! We are 99% sure that this will be her name!

I think Lara is a bit boring, really.

Mar-a-lago

Lara was my top choice for a girl when pregnant. (We had a boy, so didn't use it.)

Mumofgirls2017 · 10/03/2025 22:22

It’s borderline top 100. Up to you but difficult to say whether she’d ge only one!

Chuchoter · 10/03/2025 22:22

Lovely name.

I have a 7 year old Lara and love it, I haven't come across any others yet at her school and just feel it's a lovely name without being overly popular but not too unusual either.

I think it’s pretty, especially if you have any Russian or Greek heritage.

Will you put the full name of Larissa on her birth certificate and use the nick name Lara? Or just Lara? I know that’s a fashion now, to just have the nickname eg Charlie, Archie, Jamie, Beth

SemperIdem · 10/03/2025 23:11

I don’t think Larissa has even been in common use in the UK @0ctavia, Lara has been a standalone name, in much the same way Natasha is (if we’re talking Russian diminutives), so not really the same as Charlie, Beth etc

As PP have said, the combination Lara Margot sounds a lot like Mar-a-Lago. Like it sounds like you've done a rearrangement of it for comedy effect. Unless that's intentional I would definitely avoid the combo!

rivalsbinge · 10/03/2025 23:57

I know one mid 20s and she is amazing and lovely so for me the name is fab.

farmlife2 · 11/03/2025 00:10

It's not one I would choose but there's nothing wrong with it. I once knew a lovely Lara.

Mar-a-lago

Or Mag-o-Lara

I've taught a fair few Laras. Lara, Lyra, Lana, Lila, Luna seem to be the new Ellie/Ella/Elsie/Evie/Edie.

I prefer Clara. But Lara is definitely better than Lana. Didn't take long for the older ones to cotton on to the backwards spelling of that one.
