I literally only like girl names. I don't like too traditional but not out there like Storm or River. We love girl names like Rose or Ottie, boys we have no clue! Baby due any day!

Think of the men in your life? Is there any of their names that you like, or dislike less?

Do you have a male spouse/partner/OH? If so, what does he think of his own name/middle name?

Old names in the family, perhaps? A middle name of some distant relative?

If you like the name Ottie for a girl, maybe Otto or Otis for a boy?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/02/2025 22:41

I assume Ottie is a typo for Ottilie. Well what Rose and Ottilie have in common is that they are both popular Top 100 names - although I would say Rose is more classic and Ottilie more trendy.

There are no names whatsoever in the Top 100 for boys you like at all? What about the male versions of names with popular feminine versions (if girls names are easier for you)- thinking of maybe Gabriel, Daniel or Louis?

Or some people see “a” and “ee” ending sounds as more feminine and you are spoiled for choice with those - Henry, Toby, Ezra, Noah?

Or look at boys names that are now also used as trendy girls names (in Hollywood at least) - Evan, Dylan, James?

I think your mistake is thinking of "baby boy" names. Try to think more of adult names, and then a cutesy diminutive if you want.

Great post. I was going to try and say something similar but could not explain what I meant as well as this.

What about longer names? I love Sebastian or Nathaniel

Lellamir · 18/02/2025 04:20

Whenever my mum was pregnant, we kids would call out suggestions from the credits after a TV show or film. A long, rolling list of names, usually rejected for being 'too American'. But if, like me, you like the Scandi Noir and Australian series', you might find something unusual, you haven't already considered.

Finality · 18/02/2025 04:35

Sometimes there just isn't a name you love. I had loads of girls names on our list but no front runners for boys.

When the baby was born and it was in fact a boy, we took the night each made a top 3 from our long list. We had different first choices but the same second, so that's what he was.

Now I can't imagine him ever being anything else, and we love the name because we love him.

This. He'll be a man most of his life.
If you are only looking at currently very popular names for baby boys, your choice will be limited.

Look at names from your grandparents or their brothers or something like that.

The names of mine are now trendy (eg. Arthur). I'd have to name change if I listed them all but they're much loved on here.

RogueFemale · 19/02/2025 00:11

@armt I've never heard of Ottie for a girl, and googled it, and it said it's unisex, so use that if you like it. Or Otis, which is pretty close (and certainly better and less infantile for an adult male).

Absolutely safe bets for adult male names - James or Edward. Good, solid, masculine names.

If they are too classic for your taste, then how about Orlando.

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/02/2025 00:20

Laurie is perfect

LSTMS30555 · 19/02/2025 00:29

I'm currently in love with the name Leon for a boy.
I'm torn between Leona or Simone for a girl but 100% Leon for a boy; not unheard of but also not too popular and a good strong name.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/02/2025 01:12

Just a vent, then? 🤷‍♀️
