I literally only like girl names. I don't like too traditional but not out there like Storm or River. We love girl names like Rose or Ottie, boys we have no clue! Baby due any day!

How about Elliott?

MayaKovskaya · 19/02/2025 09:08

You could always go for something classic, which won't date, like John, Mark, Peter, Paul, Patrick, Anthony, David.
Thus avoiding one which will be regarded like Darren or Wayne 15 years down the line.

Mylittlebobble · 19/02/2025 09:20

I liked looking at the meanings of the names when I was pregnant, and tried to pick something that had significance to me.

Having suggestions from different age groups was helpful too. My Dad made a suggestion of famous writer, which was classic and suited a baby or an 80 year old. It was very popular about 20 years ago but no so much now. DS hasn't had another one in his class, which is nice as my name is extremely bog standard and there were usually three of us in a class.

Just to add to the classics list:
Daniel, Joseph, Thomas.

Easily shortened to cute names.

Mi find these, especially Mark, Paul and Dave, very dated! There are soo many 50 year olds with these names...

That's my point. They're not all current, so won't date like the ubiquitous Alfie, Teddy, Albie, Archie etc.
Be a bit different, but not too left field.
When I was at school, Beatrice, Emily and Elsie were "old lady" names. They're popular now

My closest friend has a 15 year old David. She said it's brilliant- the only other people in the school who have that name is a teacher. No 5 in each class.

I can imagine! In one class (secondary) I have 3 Alfies, in another there are 2. Every class features a Noah and an Archie. The Izzy thing has died down a bit but in every class there's a Lily Rose and at least one Amelia.
I haven't taught a David for years. I recently taught a Kenneth (Ken) which I thought was lovely - the only one in the school (1,800 students).

SilverBlueRabbit · 19/02/2025 10:00

I like Ken!

In DS1's class (14) there is a Gregory that is never shortened to Greg. I like that alot. When he was in nursery there was a Michael. Michael is a great name IMO. DS2 (13) has a Peter in his class. My two are named fairly common top 20 names for their respective years. I still love those names but yes, you do come across others all the time.

Lellamir · 19/02/2025 10:31

I seriously considered David, and would have called him Davey - never Dave.

DS' actual first and middle names are also on that list, though.

Good list!

But those 1970s names are still DATED, just to another era!!

I much prefer names that NEVER date as they are never top 10 fashionable.

No need for all the capitals. I have my glasses on, thanks.

There might be loads of 50 year old ones but the names are still classic and timeless.

The Emily and Elsie example is great. There aren't many Emilys my age, and probably no Elsies. Emily was a classic name that wasn't fashionable, but Elsie was your Nan's friend's name, probably short for Elizabeth.
The versions of Elizabeth popular then were Beth and Lisa, which sound dated now.

Emily and Elsie are very popular now, but Elsie is the one that isn't timeless.

@MayaKovskaya , that poster challenges everything.

Changeissmall · 19/02/2025 11:06

Agree with @MayaKovskaya. my son has a 1950s classic name on that list and he’s the only one in the school. It won’t date him like all the Alfie, Theo, Noah names will.

If you like girls names then what about boys names that start with a feminine sound? .

Julie - Julian.

Elle - Elliot.

Lucy - Lucien

Olive - Olivier or Oliver

TomatoSandwiches · 19/02/2025 11:36

Adam is a good solid boy/man's name imo.
