We've been looking through family names and came across Renfred which is funny as both Ren and Fred our in our top list.

Is it a complete no?

It’s fine as a surname, stupid as a first name.

DefinitelyNotMaybe · 16/02/2025 10:07

Sounds like a company that makes sanitary disposal bins.

StamppotAndGravy · 16/02/2025 10:12

I like it! It's not outlandish and sound like it was probably a name 500 years ago

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 16/02/2025 10:18

Is Ren actually a name (apart from for Stimpy's pal)?

Even if so, the two together sound weird for a single name nowadays. Would you call your child Jamespeter or Charlottelily?

midlifeattheoasis · 16/02/2025 10:24

Terrible

I think Fred is better

Twoshoesnewshoes · 16/02/2025 10:32

Love it, especially with Ren as nn

tsmainsqueeze · 16/02/2025 10:32

Sounds like Renfield -Dracula's assistant.

SheRaaPrincessOfPower · 16/02/2025 10:32

Go for it then. You like REN. You like Fred. Renfred is a family name. No downfalls.

paranoiaofpufflings · 16/02/2025 10:34

It's not to my personal taste, but I don't see why it shouldn't be used as a name - no different to Alfred, Wilfred, Winifred.

SheRaaPrincessOfPower · 16/02/2025 10:34

I see REN has autocorrected to capitals. Apparently it's the measure of the load of a device on a telephone line. Or something.

Uricon2 · 16/02/2025 10:35

I like it. Quick Google found this

"It may derive from the name Raginfred, which combines ragin (counsel, advice) with fred (peace) to mean “peaceful counsel.”

and

"The “Ren” in Renfred has also been interpreted to mean “power” or “raven,” so other potential meanings are “powerful peace” or “peaceful raven.”

Nice meanings, good shortened forms, family association, unusual but not outlandish. Go for it!

I also immediately thought of Ren & Stimpy 😬

It may derive from the name Raginfred
This is nicer than Renfred imo.

DeepFatFried · 16/02/2025 10:40

It wouldn’t be my choice.

As it is not familiar as a name it sounds to me like one of those names made up by small companies that combines two owners names. Making concrete pipes or sewing machine widgets or something.

Or a 1960s bungalow lived in by Rena and Fred.

But taste in names is highly subjective. I often see DC’s name viewed with horror here (and suggested as a good choice)

SheRaaPrincessOfPower · 16/02/2025 10:49

Or a 1960s bungalow lived in by Rena and Fred.

Wasn't Fred West's first wife called Rena?

Hotflushesandchilblains · 16/02/2025 11:01

Reminds me of the guy from Dracula. Maybe as a middle name?

Hollieandtheivie · 16/02/2025 11:04

tsmainsqueeze · 16/02/2025 10:32

Sounds like Renfield -Dracula's assistant.

This was my first thought too

BaronessBomburst · 16/02/2025 11:10

I like it but would use it as a middle name. In fact I did something similar with DS. He has a perfectly normal first name with a variety of shortenings/ nicknames and then his middle name is Alaric. 😀

GammonAndEgg · 16/02/2025 11:12

I love it.

Time40 · 16/02/2025 11:21

I'm another one whose first thought was Dracula. That's four of us so far.

CountTo10 · 16/02/2025 11:28

Awful. My first thought was 'Betfred'. Doesn't sound nice at all.

Raginfred. Even better. Best name since Balonz really.
Top choice.
Sorry, I know it's not the done thing to mock on name threads but sometimes I can't control myself from doing so. 😂

Frederick, nn Freddie @armt , go for that.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 16/02/2025 12:05

When I first saw it, I misread it as Renfield - the Dracula character who has become a byword for a crazy follower, so that might be something to bear in mind. Would make an interesting/cool middle name though - lovely to have one with family links

user1492757084 · 16/02/2025 12:52

I'd only use Renfred as a second name.
But in your case, it is a family name so it will be familiar to you.

I would use Redmond without hesitation due to liking Red.
Ren, you like, so whatever feels right for you.

Andoutcomethewolves · 16/02/2025 13:07

I prefer just Ren personally (possibly due to having a mild crush on the singer/songwriter Ren 😅 in his case that was his full name at birth) but Renfred is growing on me! It doesn't sound made up to me and it's nice that there's the family connection
