Have decided on a name for a girl - but everyone hates it!

Delilah - is it really that bad? It's the only first name we can agree on (her middle name will be Rose) and we both love it.

Everyone we mention it to either says 'hmmm, unusual' or asks if we'll call her 'Deli' for short (have managed thus far not to point out that it's not pronounced 'Deli-lah').

Other names I like (and DP hates) are Cordelia, Mariella, Serena and Isabella (definitely liking names ending in 'a' at the moment).

Tom Jones. That's what I think when I hear Delilah.

But if you like it, sod everyone else. Your baby, your choice.

WallOfSilence · 07/05/2008 23:06

I don't hate it

It's a nice wee name.

emkana · 07/05/2008 23:07

DO NOT DISCUSS baby names with anyone in RL! Somebody will always have a negative opinion on the name you propose, and then you doubt it... if you love it and your dh loves it, then go for it! There's nothing wrong with the name!

eidsvold · 07/05/2008 23:07

if you like it - why not use it? I am all for not saying anything until the child is here and named - otherwise everyone thinks it is a consultative situation rather than a telling - this is what we are naming said child.

Janni · 07/05/2008 23:07

Like your others, apart from Cordelia.

A Delilah will forever have people singing 'Why, Why, Why?' at her, as though they're really witty

wrinklytum · 07/05/2008 23:07

I second WT,but if you like it,go with it.

Love Mariella, makes me think of Mariella frostrup-such a sexy voice!!!

LaDiDaDi · 07/05/2008 23:07

I don't like Mariella but I like all of your other choices.

I think that Delilah would get called "Lila" for short but I really like Cordelia with the niclkname "Cordy", that's definitely my fave from your list.

FWIW - I love the name Delilah. And it's your choice anyway. Shortens nicely to Lila or Lily, also both lovely names. Goes well with Rose, too.

LaDiDaDi · 07/05/2008 23:09

LOL at the varying opinions in the last three posts!

JUst goes to show that you can't please everyone, your baby, your choice .

QuintessentialShadows · 07/05/2008 23:10

Love Dehlila. Could be Layla for short if she wants it shortened. (Better than Deli.) Or Della. or Lily. Fantastic name!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/05/2008 23:10

Fuck em. Doesnt matter to anyone cept your daughter to be, and how you think it'll look on her CV when she's 21 and looking for a job

monkeysmama · 07/05/2008 23:12

I love it! I think it is a lovely original name. Being able to agree on a name you love is great so stick with it! MM

Janni · 07/05/2008 23:15

But then again, I just thought of that fab song from last year 'Hey there Delilah' and went all gooey...

jessikart · 07/05/2008 23:17

I think it's definitely a Marmite name - love it or hate it, there's no middle ground!

My other plan is to wait until the great emotional upheaval of the birth and then say 'I want to call her....' knowing that DP will be so awestruck by her arrival that he will agree to anything! Hell, it worked last time

I think Delilah is a lovely name, if you like it use it, ignore what everyone else says she's your baby after all.

I also love the name Cordelia.

Lilah is a good abbreviation (rather than "Deli")

i like it

tell everyone else to fuck off if you like it

unknownrebelbang · 07/05/2008 23:33

Delilah is the chant for our local footie team, so I wouldn't choose it, but it's your choice, if you like it stuff everyone else.

Isobella is a personal favourite of mine.

brimfull · 07/05/2008 23:37

I love it,and Rose is lovely too (my dd's name )

Aero · 07/05/2008 23:38

I love it. Children do tend to grow into their names and people tend to come round to names they previously didn't like, particularly if they like/love the person with the name. Go for it with complete confidence!

My folks were a bit shocked when we announced ds2's name, but they can't imagine him being called anything else now!

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/05/2008 10:14

I love it, and suggested it to dh for both of my pregnancies, but he vetoed it. It is a name that provokes strong reaction one way or the other, but agree that if both you and dh love it then use it and stop telling people in RL before she is born!

Also love Cordelia, which has also been vetoed by my (tasteless ) dh.

iwouldgoouttonight · 08/05/2008 10:26

Delilah Rose is a beautiful name.

[I want to have a baby girl so I can call her Delilah]
