Hi all,

We’re choosing the name Opal for our little girl, we love the name.
However, cannot for the life of me find a middle name that I love. DP says all my suggestions are “nice” but I want one that I just know is right.
We’ve gone through all family members and can’t find a name there that we love.

Any suggestions please?
Surname is one syllable.

I remember Opal Fruits well but my first association is the beautiful gemstone.

I like Opal Sophia.

Fruit

@Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth I’m not sure associating a name with something makes you an arsehole. Otherwise everyone would be calling their kids Adolf or Myra.

Meraleine · 31/01/2025 13:00

Although I do not believe in any superstitions at all, it might be worth you knowing that Opals are often considered an Omen of bad luck. Hence why it’s not really been used as a name through history

I'm assuming @Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth is referring to the people suggesting it as a middle name as being an arsehole obviously! There's a difference between having an association and them facetiously suggesting it as a middle name to a new mother on a Baby Names forum to try and get a laugh

Moier · 31/01/2025 13:04

Do you really need a middle name?
I didn't give my daughters one because l loved their names so much.
Opal is gorgeous on its own.

Doloresparton · 31/01/2025 13:05

@xRobin I think you need a 3/4 syllable name preferably beginning with a vowel.
Then the names will flow.
Opal Elizabeth
Opal Amelia
Opal Imogen
Opal Ursula
Opal Abigail
Opal Eveline
Opal Angeline
Opal Eloise
Opal Aurora

Manta?

but seriously something classic so she has a good choice if she doesn’t like Opal

I did see this a while ago when choosing the name, I looked into and the Romans thought of it as extremely lucky and they believed the Opal gem had healing powers.
That’s why it’s spiritual meaning can be that of healing and light. Quite sweet really x

Are you really 100% set on this name?

Do you think your little girl will thank you for naming her Opal?

Sorry, not trying to be rude @xRobin it's just not a great name. No-one will think of the pretty gemstone, all they will think of is opal fruits. And... well, I just wouldn't call her this. Sorry. JMO.

No they won't, Opal Fruits were rebranded in 1998. No-one under 35 will have any memory at all of them being called that and even those who do remember them being called that probably won't have it as their first association. Opal is a beautiful gemstone.

I’m in my 40s and all I’d think of is opal fruit and have a little giggle to myself at the weird name. People will always tell you they like the name to your face because otherwise it’s very awkward when you name the child the name you’ve indicated you think is ridiculous.

I don’t think it’s so much awkward as it is being an absolute knob to say to somebody’s face “I don’t like your baby’s name”.
We’re talking about a middle name for the name Opal here 😂
I’m not asking for people’s opinions on a name I’ve already chosen, but that seems to be what some comments are focusing on.
”Oh well I don’t like that name, all I can think of is a sweet brand that hasn’t existed for 27 years” 😂
But as it is with the internet, there’s a rush to fit everyone’s 50p in to a slot that doesn’t exist.

@xRobin

The first thing that came to my mind was 'fruits' but I'm 60! Its definitely a generational thing. Won't mean a thing to today's kids.
I think it's a lovely name, unusual but not too out there

Lyn348 · 31/01/2025 13:37

Oh I love Opal fruits/starburst, my favourite sweets!

I think Sidney is too hard with Opal which is also quite hard sounding itself. I think you need something softer like Sophia.

A Manta is spelt Opel ☺️ and is a car, which is quite clearly not what I’ll be naming my daughter after.
But thank you.

Thank you, I couldn’t use Sophia as there’s a dog in the family called Sophia 😂 do you know of an alternatives that are soft like that? x

I would pick a meaning first though. Something connected to a place, colour, time of year, person that is special to you?

Eg I picked the middle name Erin as I have some Irish background, and also a grandfather Eric.

I disagree. It’s a beautiful name and I do think of the gemstone. I didn’t think of fruit until someone suggested it.
