Iris or Alba

These are our two front runner names. Just interested in general thoughts.

Middle name will be polysyllabic, something along the lines of Evangeline (but not that).

Surname is two syllable, ending in an “ee” sound.

Alba is a lovely name, much nicer than Iris imo.

@BoleynMemories13 that is what makes me hesitate over Alba. I had a blue Alba cd player when I was young! But then, Flora seems well used enough despite that dreadful tagline lurking in the memories of those of us old enough.

Getting to the final two names and making the decision is much harder than the fun long list!

Exactly - I know kids called:

Alba
Otis (lifts)
Evan (s) (bike shop) x2
Avery (office supplies)
Flora (margarine)
Zoe (health program and car) x3
and there’s more

I mean, no one worries about bloody Henry Hoover do they! I know about 10 Henrys.

I even saw a brand the other day called Harriet. Avoiding brand names is a silly route to go down given a massive proportion of brands are named after people.

I’d vote Alba because I think it’s a nice soft sound while also remaining a bit strong and cool, whereas I’m not such a fan of sibilant names.

Alba Evangeline Bradley for example is lovely. Flows nicely. Iris would too, but my choice is Alba.

RuthW · 25/01/2025 08:32

Iris is nicer.

I think Alba is a bit ugly.

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/01/2025 09:52

Iris. Gorgeous name.

Where I’m from, Alba and Albert sound pretty much the same when said aloud - and there are millions of Albert’s!

Emanwenym · 25/01/2025 09:57

A beautiful flower and goddess vs cheap electrical brand and political party?
Iris sounds so much nicer than Alba, which would get mistaken for Albert here.

VelvetWildflower · 25/01/2025 09:58

I love the name Alba but Iris is so classic and pretty. Honestly would flip a coin.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/01/2025 11:33

Really like Alba but not keen on Iris

Notgivenuphope · 25/01/2025 11:34

Both are lovely! And I love Evangeline too.

Finally a MNer with some taste in names.

aldisud · 25/01/2025 11:35

Alba

I know too many Irises....and it always makes me think of eyeball and recognition systems. Alba is so intriguing and has the prettiness of Ava with an added extra.

IHateWasps · 25/01/2025 11:37

Iris. I’m Scottish and as it means Scotland it seems to me like naming your child England or Wales. Just odd. Also it sometimes has political connotations here and Iris has a nicer sound.

MassiveSalad22 · 25/01/2025 11:59

Oh also Iris is the software our school and masses of others use for parent communications. So your choices are between software or hardware 😉

Mirabai · 25/01/2025 16:50

Iris.

Alba is a really ugly name.

buybuysellsell · 25/01/2025 16:57

Another vote for Iris. It is lovely and timeless.

Alba is a bit "trying to be different" and not very pretty.

Pigsinblankets13 · 25/01/2025 17:01

I prefer Alba for a first name...(this is coming from me who's DD's middle name is Iris (after my DGM)! So am a fan for personal sentimental reasons but weirdly not as a first name!)

thebignewtvsbroken · 25/01/2025 17:06

Both good.

Wait until she's born and I think you will come to a decision naturally.

lovelysunshine22 · 25/01/2025 17:19

Iris is lovely, Alba is just weird.

museumum · 25/01/2025 17:22

I’ve met a Spanish Alba but as a Scot I wouldn’t use it. It’s a bit odd in Scotland. Like calling a child Cymru.

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 25/01/2025 17:23

Love Iris, Alba not so much. We meet a dog called Alba on our dog walks and I think it's a rubbish name for a dog, would never consider it for a child.

Am also in Scotland so maybe why I have a strong reaction to it.

housemaus · 25/01/2025 17:36

Iris! I know a Spanish Alba and I like it, but Iris is prettier.

I see that. I’m Welsh as it happens and calling a child Cymru would come across like a very loaded statement indeed!

Iris

Justhere65 · 25/01/2025 20:11

Definitely Iris. So stylish.

AmateurNoun · 25/01/2025 20:12

I prefer Iris. Reminds me of the flower and Iris Murdoch.

I don't mind Alba but it reminds me of Jessica Alba and electrical goods.

weegiemum · 25/01/2025 20:21

Alba, for sure
