Expecting first baby, a daughter.
Husband is very keen on Maude (also open to Maud). My name is Morgane and I am often called Morg, worried it might sound too similar. Other than that I like it. Thoughts?

Maëlys is one of my favourite names. It’s not pronounced Mayleece though it’s My eleece.

Ooh I like that!

coolkatt · 23/01/2025 23:22

Sorry just no.

MistyF · 24/01/2025 08:11

I love Maud, but not keen on Maude spelling

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 24/01/2025 08:30

Maud Spellbody.

Viviennemary · 24/01/2025 08:32

I'm not keen at all. Sounds harsh and ugly IMHO. But it's a perfectly respectable name. Though not attractive.

MellowAfternoon · 24/01/2025 08:38

I adore Maude.

My lovely Nan was called Maude and I now really wish I had given my dd16 this name. The name I chose for her is lovely but is so common now, every other girl seems to have her name.

I like the fact Maude is still quite unusual.

KevinAndTracy · 24/01/2025 08:42

It's one of those names which automatically makes me think of an old lady (similar vibe to Doris, Beryl, Bertha etc) but I think it would grow on me if I knew a young person with the name.

I prefer it without the e

I've never come across one born later than the 1930s!

applemelons · 24/01/2025 09:07

Mixed bag it seems! A lot of responses echo my original thought too, I can see the dowdy references but I think it could be pulled of well by the right person. Funnily enough it came up because of Maud Adams in James Bond, and it’s definitely chic on her! It’s either incredibly chic or rather dowdy. Thank you!

I prefer Maeve or Mabel as they've not so close to maudlin or morgue.

I find Maeve and Mabel are rather ugly and dowdy sounding. Maudlin and morgue never occurred to me any more than Ella conjures Salmonella.

sel2223 · 24/01/2025 09:40

It seems is definitely a marmite type of name if that bothered you OP.
You won't get the indifference which happens with most names, it'll be strong opinions and people will either love it or loathe it.

I'm in the latter camp I'm afraid. I want to like it but I just can't, it's just not a nice sound to my ears

I always think Mabel reminds me of a golden retriever

Jewelanemone · 24/01/2025 10:14

Lovely. My mum has always called me Mabel Maud (not my real name!) so I have fond feelings about it 😊

wandawaves · 24/01/2025 10:30

I think it's awful, sorry.

clarrylove · 24/01/2025 10:32

Apparently I was very nearly called Maud. I was horrified and so glad my parents decided against it. It's a dowdy name. Would you like to be called it?

BestThingAtThisParty · 24/01/2025 10:33

What about something like Marnie instead? Still cool and classic, but without the 'dowdy / old lady' connotations?

genesis92 · 24/01/2025 10:33

Literally one of the worst names in existence. Sorry 😂

NooNakedJacuzziness · 24/01/2025 10:38

Reminds me of Barbara Windsor's character in Carry on Again Doctor - she'd changed her name from Maud Boggins to Goldie Locks. And Maud is a bit like maudlin. How about Goldie? Grin

Elissaisnotmyname · 23/01/2025 19:36

No it is very dated. I was named after a 70’s singer which I hate my Dad loved her.

Here is a clue

Me too 😉 I hated it when I was younger, but now I like it and the reason behind it.

Most names are dated or become so. Sharon/Tracey/Debbie usually born in the 70s, Lauren/Gemma/Kimberly usually born in the 80s…Evie/Ava/Olivia usually born in the 2010s/2020s.

ETA: I like Maude more than Maud. Love your name too OP!

MassiveSalad22 · 24/01/2025 11:05

Maude is v cool! I like it a lot.

’Maudie’ is a v good movie too, true story about artist Maud Lewis. Maude Apatow has helped give the name a bit of a revival/made it seems more acceptable.

Don’t know why it’s any worse than other great-grandma names that are popular at the moment - Edith, June, Mabel, Margot etc

Waterboatlass · 24/01/2025 11:10

I love it!! Maude in Harold and Maude is an absolute queen. Works at all ages, I worked with a 20 something Maude a few years ago and it was surprising to meet one but suited her.

Bloom15 · 24/01/2025 11:28

I hate Maud/Maude sorry

Mirabai · 24/01/2025 14:14

Maud Gonne…

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 24/01/2025 14:16

We have a Maude. I obviously adore the name and it suits her!

Edited to add that I never read the opinions of others because we know that it is very marmite but no one has ever said anything awful to our faces! 😂

Comedycook · 24/01/2025 14:21

Some vintage names are so glamorous and elegant....Maude is not one of them. So frumpy
