Anson for a boy

What are your thoughts on Anson for a baby boy?

I have previously only known it as a surname but I was reviewing historic files at work today at saw it as a first name - and I love it!!

My only reservation is that it might be too similar to Hanson (a la MmmBop) and I would prefer a Scottish name.

DH and I have just started TTC so I’m going to add it to my names note 🤞🏼

I love the name Lawrie.

Misread it as Arson but I might be on my own there.

You are not alone.

Hahaha, Arson never actually occurred to me

My favourites for the hypothetical babe are (in order) Sorley, Lawrie, Seoras, and Innes.

Though I expect they will also be unpopular on here.

You’re trying too hard…..and failing

You’re not 😂

ETA: I should have read the thread before replying! Anyway, I don’t like Anson as a name - once lived near an Anson Street so it doesn’t feel like the name of a person to me. Love your alternative suggestion of Lawrie.

What does that mean?

It probably means you are trying too find something different from the names are in use, but have suggested something that seems too different.

RuthW · 07/01/2025 22:07

I read it as Arson.

I misread it as Arson.. Hamish is a nice Scottish name or Fraser

So did I…

Candy24 · 07/01/2025 23:28

I thought it said Arson first time I saw it. I had to reread it. Take from that what you will.

Andoutcomethewolves · 08/01/2025 03:38

Not keen. It has vibes of the Hanson brothers or Hansel from zoolander

They're all fantastic, Sorley and Lawrie in particular.

Anson is not.

Would you consider Ansel or Anselm?

sel2223 · 08/01/2025 09:52

I'm another that misread it as Arson, sorry!

user2848502016 · 08/01/2025 10:11

I quite like Anson, you could spell it Ansen if you didn't want people to think Arson!!

I prefer it to Ansel, that just makes me think Hansel and Gretel

Lawrie is my favourite from your list though

timoteigirl · 08/01/2025 13:59

My first thought is a type with first letter missing. Anselm?
Jensen
Nelson
Ethan Jason

EcruCardigan · 08/01/2025 15:14

you could spell it Ansen if you want people to think you can't spell.

MauveVelcro · 08/01/2025 15:17

It's only one sloppily written 'n' away from Arson.

This is bound to happen at some point.
