Anson for a boy

What are your thoughts on Anson for a baby boy?

I have previously only known it as a surname but I was reviewing historic files at work today at saw it as a first name - and I love it!!

My only reservation is that it might be too similar to Hanson (a la MmmBop) and I would prefer a Scottish name.

DH and I have just started TTC so I’m going to add it to my names note 🤞🏼

Sorley? Is that pronounced sorely? Surely not? Why would you choose a name beginning with sore?

Ansel is much nicer than Anson. Anson just makes me think of my Devonshire roots 'alright me 'ansum'. Whereas Ansel makes me think of the amazing photographer.

YoYoFlo · 07/01/2025 18:01

I read it as arson as well 🤭

Anson sounds like how my friend from Essex says 'handsome'!

Really like innes though.

PhenomenalCucumber · 07/01/2025 18:02

For me, Ansel -> Hansel -> Gingerbread house

Hahaha, Arson never actually occurred to me

My favourites for the hypothetical babe are (in order) Sorley, Lawrie, Seoras, and Innes.

Though I expect they will also be unpopular on here.

Are they suppose to be boy names or girl names?

Well it’s the anglicised version of the Gaelic Somhairle.. but that would give MN a meltdown.

Misread it as Arson but I might be on my own there.

I was all fired up to let loose on the ridiculous name of Arson until I read it again!

There's a creche near me called The Gingerbread House. Bit of a strange name considering the witch lived there in the fairy tale. Not the safest environment for children. 😆

ToKittyornottoKitty · 07/01/2025 18:09

I think Ansom is better than Ansel, both are better than your other names.

TheGirlOnTheLanding · 07/01/2025 18:24

I love Innes and Sorley (which isn't pronounced as 'sorely', it is 'sore' to rhyme with 'for', not 'fore'). Anson isn't to my taste but surnames-as-forenames is quite a Scottish tradition (Campbell, Cameron, Fraser, Findlay, Lewis, Stuart etc.)

Do you mean it’s a silent ly?

EcruCardigan · 07/01/2025 18:30

Hanson is OK, as surnames as first names go.
I thought Arson too, then 'he'll be Annie'.

BBQPete · 07/01/2025 18:32

Unfortunately, this doesn't help me, as for and fore sound the same to me.
Can anyone else help as to how this is pronounced ?

LaDeeDaDeeDa · 07/01/2025 18:38

Sorley, Lawrie, Seoras, and Innes.

Sorley. Surely not.

Lawrie. Ok

Seoras. Sore arse.

Innes. John Innes.

Turophilic · 07/01/2025 18:41

I like Anson. I knew one in high school and he was lovely, which probably swayed me.

Anson Williams was in Happy Days and went on to direct, I think.

It comes down to accent I think, for me the r is soft, unlike the hard R how the English would say sorely.

Sorry another TT but it’s useful to hear it spoken I think. It’s like Sheaw-rus, Gaelic for George.

That makes sense thanks! I think that’s part of the issue on here, if a Scottish/Irish person introduced their baby to me with that name I’d think it’s cute (and probably ask again how to pronounce it 😅) but written down my Yorkshire brain can’t work it out.
