Really struggling for boy’s names (top 3 and suggestions please!)

We are due baby boy number 2 early April and I’m really struggling for names. Our top 3 are…

  1. Finlay
  2. Ruairi
  3. Luca

Finlay is our front runner at the moment, but I’m worried it sort of sounds like a limerick with our surname which is Williams?! Maybe I’m being silly but to me it sounds a bit rhymey?

As a bit of background, DH and I both have Celtic names (Welsh and Scottish). Our first is Elis, so a Welsh name. Because if this would would prefer to go for a Welsh or Scottish name. So based on that Luca is probably not a name we would choose. Ruairi I believe is the Irish spelling, and Scottish is Ruairidh. I don’t think we would go for this as my name has a DH on the end and it’s a bit much 😅

So that leaves Finlay as our best option, but does it work with our surname?!

Any suggestions for Scottish/Welsh names that work with our surname and go with our son’s name are very welcome!

Thanks in advance x

I think that if you hadn’t pointed it out I wouldn’t have noticed that Finlay Williams is a little bit tricky together. I think it’s fine.
And I love the name Finlay (and your spelling).

Bobbybobbins · 06/01/2025 21:44

Finlay is a great name and I think goes well with your elder son's name and surname.

DaisyEM · 06/01/2025 21:46

@Bobbybobbins @DefyingGravy thanks both! I’m probably overthinking how it sounds with our surname. I do think it goes really nicely with our son’s name 🥰

Elis and Ruairi is great!

DaisyEM · 06/01/2025 21:56

@MiddleAgedDread I do like Ruairi, but I’m not sure using the Irish spelling makes sense, and the Scottish spelling is a bit much 😖 I think it’s definitely a close 2nd at the moment though and we probably won’t decide for sure until he’s here anyway 🥰

Do you mean it doesn’t make sense to use it because you have connections to Scotland not Ireland? Because the spelling is right except it needs an accent called a fada on the second i, Ruairí.
Or is Rory a possibility ? I know they’re pronounced differently.

Finlay/Finley is a great choice and sounds fine with Williams, IMO.

Personally, unless you live in an area where Gaelic spellings are normalised, I'd avoid them. My brother lives in England and has a Gaelic spelling of his name - correcting people who either mispronounce his name or Anglicise the spelling is the bane of his life....

Sunnyflow · 07/01/2025 11:53

Elis and Ruairi are a great combination!

I don't like the sound of Finley Williams - they're both too similar and rhyming imo

MothershipG · 07/01/2025 12:42

Griffin - a most excellent name (though I say so myself).

EcruCardigan · 07/01/2025 15:54

Wiliam.

MabelMaybe · 07/01/2025 16:03

How about Gethin, which would go well with Williams, Asa or Osian?

Svolvaer · 07/01/2025 23:15

What about Kit? Kit Williams sounds good I think.

Itsallgonesideways · 07/01/2025 23:27

Yes Kit Williams sounds good, you could have Christian or Christopher on the bc & shorten it to Kit.

Rhys Williams
Aled Williams
Aron Williams
Ifan Williams
Marc Williams

Finlay is ok but i see what you mean about scanning, could be a bit of a mouthful with the surname. How about Finn instead? Gorgeous name

supercalafrog · 08/01/2025 00:05

Finn is lovely.
