Really struggling for boy’s names (top 3 and suggestions please!)

We are due baby boy number 2 early April and I’m really struggling for names. Our top 3 are…

  1. Finlay
  2. Ruairi
  3. Luca

Finlay is our front runner at the moment, but I’m worried it sort of sounds like a limerick with our surname which is Williams?! Maybe I’m being silly but to me it sounds a bit rhymey?

As a bit of background, DH and I both have Celtic names (Welsh and Scottish). Our first is Elis, so a Welsh name. Because if this would would prefer to go for a Welsh or Scottish name. So based on that Luca is probably not a name we would choose. Ruairi I believe is the Irish spelling, and Scottish is Ruairidh. I don’t think we would go for this as my name has a DH on the end and it’s a bit much 😅

So that leaves Finlay as our best option, but does it work with our surname?!

Any suggestions for Scottish/Welsh names that work with our surname and go with our son’s name are very welcome!

Thanks in advance x

Finlay is gorgeous, and he would probably get Fin. Fin Williams sounds great! Also love Ruari.
Not keen on Luca.
What about Fraser, Struan or Lachlan?

Love Ruairi 💖

I think with using something like Ruairi it depends where you live, as it will get misspelt a lot. I'm guessing from DS1's name that you might be in Wales, so I'd consider how trendy the name is. Something like Gethin or Rhodri doesn't seem like a baby's name right now, and Osian seems overused, so you might find he's one of 3 or more Osian Wms in his primary school. That might not be an issue if you don't mind or live somewhere else. You could use Ossian.

Luca seems faddy, and I prefer Finn to Finley. I don't like Kit.

If you look at the ONS page, it has a list of most popular names in Wales. Baby names in England and Wales - Office for National Statistics
The list seems to be missing Elis, which is No. 19 in Wales, with Ellis also popular. That makes Elis the No 2 Welsh name, not Harri.

Thanks everyone! Lots to think about. Glad most of you think Finlay sounds ok with our surname ☺️ this has made me feel more positive about it.

For reference we are in England. I appreciate what a few posters have said about choosing a name with a tricky spelling for where we are. My name is definitely up there with being challenging to spell, and it’s extremely unusual to meet someone here that’s heard of it before or knows how to pronounce it. Personally for me it’s a minor irritation and I quite like having an unusual name, but for some reason I’m not hugely keen on giving baby boy 2 a name that’s overly difficult, despite not being that bothered about my ‘difficult’ name.

My only other reservation about Finlay is that ‘Finley’ is quite popular right now, and of course they are pronounced the same. I prefer relatively uncommon yet traditional names, but feel I’m very limited as would like his name to be either Scottish or Welsh, not too tricky to spell, traditional yet not that commonly used…you can probably see why I’m struggling 😅

@DaisyEM ,sometimes an easy name can have issues, so I wouldn't be too bothered by that. My name should be pretty easy but people get it wrong.

What a gorgeous name - Finlay Williams. Love it

@EcruCardigan well that’s very true! Perhaps I’ll remove that from my decision making process ☺️

@JRSKSSBH ahh thanks ☺️

Scott Williams has a great ring to it, and no doubting roots there :D

Sparklyhat · 09/01/2025 14:58

Dylan Williams?

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/01/2025 15:07

How about Ewan ? With either the Scottish spelling (Ewan) or the Welsh (Iwan).

Namexchangex · 10/01/2025 12:26

Finlay is lovely! How about Flynn also as an alternative, similar vibes and goes well with Elis. Or pp suggestion of Ewan is nice too.

Judgejudysno1fan · 10/01/2025 12:34

I like Elis. And I love Elyas as a Muslim name in my religion too. So very similar and both lovely.
Joseph, Jacob are also very nice too.

DaisyEM · 10/01/2025 19:39

@Namexchangex Flynn is nice, just not sure of it's origins?
