Struggling to find a middle ground on names

Babysie · 16/12/2024 13:28

DH and I are excepting our first baby together, a little girl. We both have children from a pervious relationship and our naming styles aren’t similar at all. My children are Charlotte and William. His children are China, Caspian, Maya and Tristan.

So far names he really likes are
Nova
Alba
Aurora

The names I really like are
Anna
Sophie
Georgia
Grace

So far the only names we’ve both even said maybe to are Isla and Freya but neither of us love either.

Any ideas?

Iris
Ruby
Lyra
Theodora
Megan
Poppy
Greta
Jennifer
Erin
Mabel
Zoë
Clara
Joanna
Irene
Astrid
Julia
Claudia
Morwenna
Miranda
Eliza
Beth

Any good?

Are you both choosing purely on sound, or does meaning, association etc come into it?

AuntieStella · 16/12/2024 13:53

Well, I prefer your list to his!

But here's my shot at some girl's names that might bridge the gap

Tallulah, Lula, Annabeth, Amber, Natasha, Xanthe, Giselle, Cleo, Azariah, Tabitha, Imogen.

Fireworknight · 16/12/2024 13:53

Darcy
Paige

Elsa
Saffron

Someone said each write a list, amalgamate it then go through and each strike out one until you have a short list. Then can discuss the shortlist. Maybe that would help?

Firsttimebabymummy · 16/12/2024 14:29

I much prefer your list.

Sophia instead of sophie? Susannah?

Babysie · 16/12/2024 14:41

Thanks everyone.
The issue is I prefer timeless names that are traditional and classic and he really really hates that type of name. He likes his kids to have lesser used names (in 2000 when his Maya was born it wasn’t very popular at all, even though it is now).

Well I prefer your list apart from Alba is quite pretty. Alba Grace is nice

Or Aurora but call her Rory

DPotter · 16/12/2024 14:48

DP and I couldn't agree at all on names - well actually he wouldn't even have a sensible discussion.

However once she was born we agreed really quickly on a name neither of us had thought of before. She just was this name. So you don't have to have a name firmly in place before she's born.

Then you could think of hyphenating, eg Sophie-Nova, Grace-Alba, Anna-Meg ? I know of 2 families who left the naming of a child to their existing children with great success. maybe something to think of as your blending families ??

SquigglePigs · 16/12/2024 15:01

Can you find some older style names that are still less commonly used that you might both like.

Things like:

Tabitha
Tessa
Adrienne
Meredith
Saskia
Clarissa
Marianne
Lara
Asha
Carla
Georgia
Georgina
Kathryn
Inara

paranoiaofpufflings · 16/12/2024 15:04

You need to suggest something less traditional for him to like it. He needs to suggest something less unusual for you to like it. Once you both accept that level of compromise needs to be made you'll find it easier to come up with suggestions. Isla and Freya are both lovely names. Keep going with more in that area.

Esme
Erin
Amber
Eloise
Lara
Phoebe

In fairness she’s 26 now and loves her name!
India is actually a pretty commonly used name no? If he didn’t have a China already I’d consider India!

Mirabel (nn plum)
Perdita
Olympia
Verity
Adelheid (Germanic Alice nn also Heidi)
Guinivere
Genevieve

MinPinSins · 16/12/2024 16:49

Every single one of his names is currently more popular than Anna and Georgia! Aurora is in the top 50…

If he wants names that are lesser used, all he has to do is get up to date with current name trends and he should come over to your way of thinking.

GreyhoundGal1 · 16/12/2024 17:40

What about Adeline, Marianne, Sylvie, Alma, Tessa? All more traditional names but not popular at the moment.

You could look at the ONS 2023 stats from 200 onwards or something to see if you both like any?

tarheelbaby · 16/12/2024 17:44

I think Aurora (Latin for dawn, daybreak), from his list, is the best match with yours and Grace would make a good middle name with that.

Hobbesmanc · 16/12/2024 17:47

Adelaide
Dorothea
Adela
Cecelia
Astrid
Ottilie
Clara.
Beatrix

Classical but still a bit edgey
