Struggling to find a middle ground on names

DH and I are excepting our first baby together, a little girl. We both have children from a pervious relationship and our naming styles aren’t similar at all. My children are Charlotte and William. His children are China, Caspian, Maya and Tristan.

So far names he really likes are
Nova
Alba
Aurora

The names I really like are
Anna
Sophie
Georgia
Grace

So far the only names we’ve both even said maybe to are Isla and Freya but neither of us love either.

Any ideas?

Nova? Like the car? That was dropped as it means 'doesn't go' somewhere in Europe😂. Please don't call your child Sophie-Nova!! Having kids called Charlotte, William and Alba/Aurora would be a really odd combination.

I think you're going to struggle to compromise here OP, what about Briony or Cecily/Cicily?

What about something traditional in another country?
(eg Inez, Lucia)
Or something traditional with an uncommon nn?
(eg Susan/Zuzu)
Or something unusual with a more traditional nn?
(eg Antigone/Annie, Mariposa/Mari)

You have much better taste op.
I would hate to be called China for example.
If you can’t agree then you will both have to compromise and chose a name you both like rather than one which one if you lived and the other hates.
Why not both write a list of 10 names. Then each of you discards 5 from the other’s list.
Out of these 10 you each discard your lease favourite 2 names.
If you still can’t agree then you carry on like this until you get down to the last 2.
Who’s surname will the baby have?
The other person then decides which name will be the first name as let’s face it, nobody uses middle names.

Raffaella nn Rafi
Callista
Ginevra nn Gin
Fern (a personal fave, DS would have been Fern if he'd been a DD)
Judith

Or maybe one of the virtue names, Blythe, Prudence nn Prue, Felicity nn Fliss, Faith?

RoundSquareWithTriangles · 17/12/2024 17:12

Fenella
Anthea

She could always go by either Ella or Thea, if she wants a name that blends in a little more.

Indie? since you said you’d have considered India

Thanks everyone.
The issue is I prefer timeless names that are traditional and classic and he really really hates that type of name. He likes his kids to have lesser used names (in 2000 when his Maya was born it wasn’t very popular at all, even though it is now).

China is a bloody awful name.

Could you compromise with a classic name that isn't currently popular, like Louisa or Caroline?

Enko · 17/12/2024 17:35

Eloisa
Merredith
Cressida
Eugenie

Will admit my naming style is more like your dhs than yours

I love your choices/style (especially Anna) but imo it’s definitely easier to get a name that blends both your styles when you are having a little girl - as timeless sounding boys names that are out of the top 100 (as your DH prefers) are much rarer.

Luckily for girls, it can be as simple as going Classical/Latin/Greek - I don’t think Antonia, Claudia, Serena, Selena/Selene, Helena, Verity, Celia or Cecilia have ever been in the Top 100 and even something like Felicity, Julia/Juliet or Louisa rarely have. I don’t think any of those names sound that unusual yet they are used in relatively small numbers (compared to your lovely but popular picks like Sophie, Grace etc).

They also sound classic and timeless enough that I couldn’t guess the ages of any women/girls with those names, unlike your DH’s choices - Aurora may be classical but it’s risen so rapidly that I’d assume most Aurora’s are young unlike say, similar Antonia.

Alternatively would something like Cora, Rosa, or Nina be a compromise? Still outside the Top 100 (at the moment) and reasonably classic sounding but similar to Anna, Nova and Alba in style.

Or could you consider less common Anya instead of Anna? (in some countries it’s even used as a diminutive of Anna - so in theory if DH agreed, you could have Anna on the BC but he could call her Anya 🤣 -win win!)
