Thoughts on Cecily

What is on your opinion on Cecily for a girl?
I often seen meaning to be listed as 'blind', but recently I found some comments saying original Latin word (caecus) from which name Cecilia (Cecily) derives might have meaning of 'secret, mystery, obscure' alongside of meaning of blind... I liked this name for a long time, but now that I know that name doesn't necessarily mean blind I like this name even more.
What nicknames would you choose? I like Cissy/Sissy (have some reservation), Cily and Ily (ee-ly), but I know many nicknames aren't really nice. We would mostly be using full name, but would like to find usable short forms even if they aren't most obvious.

Elinor m brent dyer. Nice name though

BeretInParis · 13/12/2024 21:49

I know one. Her nickname is Cess. Which is a shame as Cecily is such a pretty name but Cess is like a pit.

CurrentHun · 13/12/2024 21:50

Cecilia is pretty, good NN Celia.

CessSilly isn’t a good mix of sounds or the meanings in the sounds. It doesn’t read as elegant to my ear.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/12/2024 21:54

I like it.

BootballJoy · 13/12/2024 21:54

I like it. There's a Cecily in DC class.

JT69 · 13/12/2024 22:05

Love the name Cecily - Cecily Neville comes to mind. A formidable lady of her time and the mother of two kings.

Boutonnière · 13/12/2024 22:20

Beautiful name ! - the male version (Cecil) certainly hasn’t worn well over the years but Cecily has managed to keep graceful connotations .

theduchessofspork · 14/12/2024 01:23

I really like it

I'm guessing Cece (see-see) is the most common shortform, though I don't know you need one. Sissy is awful.

Cecile is very nice too

@JT69 Ah, that’s why the name was conjuring up images in my mind of a lady in a headdress, I knew that I’d read about a famous Cecily.

Ladybird69 · 14/12/2024 01:46

Absolutely love it ❤️

catin8oots · 14/12/2024 01:50

My DS (25) has the most beautiful glamorous friend called Cecily.

Everyone calls her Ce (pronounced see)

I love it

Sunnyflow · 14/12/2024 14:02

I don't like the meaning - shame as it's a nice sounding name

MumonabikeE5 · 14/12/2024 14:55

Think it’s pretty and dainty And I like it.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 13/12/2024 20:15

I absolutely love it - and like her in The Importance of Being Earnest.

Me too!

And Cee-cee would be a good nickname.

shoopshoopdedoo · 14/12/2024 15:01

I feel like I want to like it more than I do. The Cess = cesspit association really puts me off I think.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 14/12/2024 15:03

Love it. However as I already have a Felicity, I'd probably go for Cecilia over Cecily. I'd always thought Ci -ci as a nickname

OkPedro · 14/12/2024 15:19

Are you pronouncing it See Lee ??
The Cecily I knew pronounced it that way

WrongSortOfPoster · 14/12/2024 15:53

I can't see why anyone would pronounce Cecily as See Lee.

Maybe her nickname was Cily (see-lee)? Pronunciation I encountered was usually Ses-i-lee

I used to know a female Cecil who went by Chess. She was Portuguese/ Spanish/ Scots/ something else.
I also know a Cesse pronounced Sessy, and two teenagers names Cecily who don't use a short form.
I don't think the name means anything- you get this sound name in so many languages.

MassiveSalad22 · 14/12/2024 16:13

Very wet lettuce (you did ask!). Sissy and Silly as nicknames really don’t help!

DramaAlpaca · 14/12/2024 16:14

I adore Cecily.

I much prefer it to Cecilia and Celia.

No idea but the woman I knew introduced herself as See Lee

leia24 · 14/12/2024 17:46

I don't like it but I do like Sicily

WrongSortOfPoster · 14/12/2024 18:17

@OkPedro , Cecilia/Celia could shorten to Celie I suppose.
But Cecily said as See Lee seems bizarre.
