Thoughts on Cecily

What is on your opinion on Cecily for a girl?
I often seen meaning to be listed as 'blind', but recently I found some comments saying original Latin word (caecus) from which name Cecilia (Cecily) derives might have meaning of 'secret, mystery, obscure' alongside of meaning of blind... I liked this name for a long time, but now that I know that name doesn't necessarily mean blind I like this name even more.
What nicknames would you choose? I like Cissy/Sissy (have some reservation), Cily and Ily (ee-ly), but I know many nicknames aren't really nice. We would mostly be using full name, but would like to find usable short forms even if they aren't most obvious.

Much prefer Cecilia.

GoldenLegend · 17/12/2024 04:27

I love it. It was the name of the heroine in one of my favourite books as a child.

JMSA · 17/12/2024 04:44

It's horrible and too twee. A bit like Ottilie.
Sorry.
Cassie is nice though.

CruCru · 17/12/2024 06:39

I like it. It’s also not overused.

Interlaken · 17/12/2024 06:42

I also like it a lot. (And Cecile and Cecelia, although Celia not!)

wandawaves · 17/12/2024 06:45

Hate it.

Also why on earth would you nickname your child sissy 😮

Pumpkincozynights · 17/12/2024 06:46

I don’t really like it. I find it quite awkward and clumsy for some reason.

I love it! But I would be afraid to use it in case she had a lisp and struggled to say it.

That's actually a very good point. I had a bad lisp as a child for years and was very shy so I can imagine the horror of having a S- heavy name, and it really IS S-heavy! Imagine the teasing and worse...

FloralMoon · 17/12/2024 07:40

I love it! I went to school with a Cecily and have never met another one since - I really like names which are not unusual but uncommon.

I think it’s a pretty and elegant name. Doesn’t even remotely make me think of a cesspit.

NewShoes · 17/12/2024 08:44

Absolutely love it. Teach a delightful child called Cecily, she doesn't shorten it to anything.

I found "S" difficult to say as a child - not exactly a lisp, but "Cecily" would have been a challenge. Nobody ever made fun of me, but it would be frustrating not to be able to say your own name.

CurrentHun · 17/12/2024 09:06

How about Céline as a much less fussy, stronger sounding alternative?

MikeRafone · 17/12/2024 09:11

I like Cicelia
lia for short

I was thinking the same, plus next door’s kid can’t say his Ls which is also common - Cecily could become Thethiyee.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 17/12/2024 09:29

Always makes me think of celery but it's not a bad name and just unusual enough. I've only ever met one, who would now be about 16. If you want a short form I think Ceci sounds nicer than the others.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 17/12/2024 10:23

I really like it.

Mischance · 17/12/2024 10:26

But Cess as a nickname would be a bit crappy! Smile

DurdleSnore · 17/12/2024 12:00

I love it. Was on my list for DD2 but DH vetoed as it sounded ‘weak and lispy’.

user1492757084 · 19/12/2024 10:28

I like it.
I also like Cecile, Celia and Cicely
I love Cicely Mary Barker's work and the Cicely flower.

Matformouse · 19/12/2024 23:08

I love the name. DH would have vetoed but in a parallel universe I like to think I have a Cecily, Romilly and Verity 😀

Ceci is a nice nickname. I knew a Spanish Cecilia and her nn was Ceci.
