what do you think of Carlton?

our ds was born on Friday and on Sunday we decided on 'Carlton' as his name! it seems to much annoyance that some friends and family are not keen! We have had 'he'll get Carl' 'it's a cigerette make' 'it's a black name' and so on.
what is your opinion and has anybody else had this problem?

It's not for me personally, but if you like it don't change it.

you're probably too young to remember Rhoda,the US comedy on tv,aeons ago in fact, and there was an unseen doorman called Carlton...'this is Carlton your doorman'... that's what it makes me think of anyway...

It is a TV region too and I know a few black people called Carlton.

I dont like it at all and think it will get shortened to Carl.

He is your baby though.

Our local tv station was called Carlton so that's what springs to mind.
at 'it's a black name'.
If you like it, stick to your guns.
We gave DS2 a name no-one else liked so under pressure we changed it. I wish we'd stuck with it now.

Ok, my opinion, honestly: Fresh Prince nerdcore. But then I've never liked any Carl-type names.

He's your son, it's your choice, if you like it and it suits him just ignore everyone else.

Its a brand name for kitchen paper towels in South Africa called Carlton Roll.

I instantly thought of Rhoda to. But no one under 40 would remember that! I like the name, as long as you accept that it WILL be shortened to Carl at school. As for 'it's a black name' - words fail me.

It's a TV channel or a make of cigarette and he WILL get called Carl even if it's not until he hits teenagerdom and all his mates can't manage anything more than one syllable.

sitdownpleasegeorge... a fully fledged member of THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE USE OF REAL NAMES.

We have very traditional names for our children and my mum still only approves of one of her 3 grandchildren's names so you can't win even if you use real names.
