what do you think of Carlton?

our ds was born on Friday and on Sunday we decided on 'Carlton' as his name! it seems to much annoyance that some friends and family are not keen! We have had 'he'll get Carl' 'it's a cigerette make' 'it's a black name' and so on.
what is your opinion and has anybody else had this problem?

Definately means the Fresh Prince butler to me. But when people get to know someone, they 'become' that name and the other connotations become unimportant. I bet the friends of that poor little girl Ikea don't think of the shop once they get to know her.

I don't like it but he's your baby so you get to decide. Does it bother you if complete strangers assume something about his background from the name? Because I think Carlton has connotations of not being terribly posh. You might think that's no bad thing but worth knowing.

totally fresh prince of bel air. sorry! but you know as he gets older he will 'own' the name more and your family will stop criticising it. do what suits yourself!

i knew a carlton when i was a teenager he was a really lovely lad and ended up working as a police man. so i have onl good thoughts when i hear this name. His name was never shortened to carl either.
Don't let anyone change your mind on a name... we all have very different opinions on names (otherwise we'd ALL have the same name!) so if you love it just go with it!!!

It reminds me of an old West Indian man - probably because the only Carltos I know are old and West Indian (apart from Fresh prince of Bel Air Carlton!). If you like it though, go for it. I hate the idea of 'black' and 'white' names. What nonsense.

Don't like the name - but don't like the implication that black name = bad thing more. I think I will step away from this thread.
