That’s our choice for DS, but all our UK friends (DH and I live in London but are not British) seem to be a bit meh about this name. Is there anything wrong with it or any associations we might not be aware of?

Lovely. I also really like Jolyon. However, Dh vetoed that before ds was born!

Snowxmas · 23/11/2024 23:23

I know one and he is gay. It’s probably wrong of me, but it is feminine sounding and so that’s what I associate with the name.

Marcipex · 23/11/2024 23:35

Jolyon is much nicer and can be Jolly for short. A happy name.

TheBirdintheCave · 24/11/2024 00:02

I love it. It was on our boy list for baby two along with Jolyon, Lucian, Conrad and Edmond.

Definitely use it!

I never know how to say that. Is it literally - Jolly-On?? That seems too weird, like jog on.

One thing that puts me off it is that it’s two girls names put together. Julie Anne.

The other thing is that the only one I know is a lying cheating slimeball.

Ha! I wonder if it's the same one that I know.

Manchesterbythesea · 24/11/2024 08:44

I don’t like it at all. It’s a very wet and pathetic name.Very feminine too and as someone else said you are putting a target on your kids back.

TheBirdintheCave · 24/11/2024 09:09

@pinkdelight It's JO-lee-un last two bits said run together. Hard to describe!

Oh, I never knew that and wouldn't have guessed. But I think the 'hard to describe' says a lot. On balance, it's gotta be better not to have a name that's hard to describe how to pronounce.

But thank you for explaining!

Bigredcombine · 24/11/2024 09:21

I think it's lovely. It seems solid and respectable to me.

My name's Julian and this is my friend Sandy.

Another Round the Horne fan😉

spiggydit · 24/11/2024 15:29

I've got a 30 year old Julian - he really likes his name because it's relatively unusual round our way. He went through a bit of a rough school and into a manual trade with no issues around his name. He's Jools to family and close friends and Julian to everyone else.

J86579 · 24/11/2024 15:43

Ok at least not everyone hates it 😂 thanks all for the comments, including the negative ones, it’s good to get the picture

When I was at school a couple of rich girls' dads were called Julian

DreamingDaisies · 24/11/2024 15:47

I know a fair few under 3. It seems to be getting quite popular. Like Gideon which is not dissimilar.

I don't personally like either much (too many vowels and parts) but that's my problem not yours, and it makes a change from Alfie . . .

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 15:49

I don't like it. It's very long and feminine for a boy in my opinion

Jesus Gideon is even worse.

Famous Five and Assange.

Posh, wet, feminine.

Julian Clary is fab though, really genuine and likeable. A good role model, IMO. Though potentially hard to live up to...

Julius is more interesting.

fairislecable · 24/11/2024 15:53

I know of two men called Julian one was a senior lawyer, the other one much younger and was a sales manager he was Julian James nicknamed JJ.

Its a lovely classic name.

CarrotPencil · 24/11/2024 15:55

Julie
Ann
Ian

All not great for a boy.

It's pretty wet. Sad as I want to like it and not be mean but that's my honest, anonymous opinion!

BeachRide · 24/11/2024 15:56

As I was being stitched up after my CS, the anaesthetist was very excited to hear our chosen name of Julian and put his phone to my ear to confirm to his colleague. Apparently they had a bet going as to who would have a baby named after them 😀

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 15:56

I mean Julian is not great to be honest.
