Julian

That’s our choice for DS, but all our UK friends (DH and I live in London but are not British) seem to be a bit meh about this name. Is there anything wrong with it or any associations we might not be aware of?

Sorry but I think it's awful. I've never met a Julian in real life so I'm using a stereotype but it makes me think of a posh public school boy.

CustardCreams2 · 24/11/2024 16:07

For some reason I imagine Julian as a gay Colin Firth.

Lallydallydune · 24/11/2024 16:11

It's dreary

amoreoamicizia · 24/11/2024 16:11

I don't think Julian being a slightly posh kind of name is a negative. I mean, posh people exist and there's nothing wrong with being posh. "Posh" isn't an insult, it's just a type of person that makes up society. I say that as someone who was treated very poorly by a posh Julian 😔

Well a lot of people don't like posh people due to the unfairness of the system

IE posh people are wealthy because their parents are wealthy, and they keep all the wealth

EdithStourton · 24/11/2024 16:18

I like it.

But then, I have known a very nice, kind and entertaining Julian for most of my life, which probably biases me a bit.

StressedQueen · 24/11/2024 16:35

Absolutely love Julian

Pokemamma · 24/11/2024 16:36

I know 4 Julian’s. It’s quite a common down south for men 40+. Every one of them is well educated, kind and loaded.

KirstenBlest · 24/11/2024 17:21

Not true.

I'm in the South and am in my 50s but don't know any Julians.

It must be common in some social circles and unusual in others.

Chachacha01 · 24/11/2024 17:28

I only know one in their 60s. It’s a bit posh, a bit feminine and a bit old-fashioned.

naemates · 24/11/2024 17:29

I met a wee Julian today, I think it's away to have its moment.

Surprised at the reaction here, seems a perfectly normal if less heard of recently name

BlastedPimples · 24/11/2024 17:31

I love the name.

BiscottiToffee · 24/11/2024 17:32

A vote from me. We named our pet Julian. 😉

Wendolino · 24/11/2024 17:34

I'm old, I just automatically think of Julian in the Famous Five. Tall, handsome, pleasant voice, sensible, reliable. Has to be a good choice!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 24/11/2024 17:51

On the minus side: it sounds a bit upper class (I may have been influenced in this by meeting a woman long ago whose son was called Julian, and who was horrendously snobbish about other children's names)

On the plus side: Julian Lennon, who seems to be a really lovely person and talented too. I think he usually goes by Jules, as did the only Julian I've ever known at all well.

Overall: I think I like rather than dislike it, but it's not quite my style.

DLX2022 · 24/11/2024 18:11

It's awful

CookieMonster28 · 24/11/2024 18:16

Don't like it personally. I think it's very feminine sounding and a bit wet like PP said!

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 24/11/2024 18:25

CustardCreams2 · 23/11/2024 15:51

A bit wet.

I've always thought this, the two I used to know definitely were.

Julie168 · 24/11/2024 18:50

I really don't like it, it sounds posh and feminine to me.

I think it's probably a marmite name.

Moveoverdarlin · 24/11/2024 18:53

I think it’s so dated. I think of a posh, effeminate old man in his 60s who dabbles in antiques.

custardcreamx · 24/11/2024 18:53

May be a childish claim but it reminds me of kind Julian from Madagascar🫣

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/11/2024 18:54

I really like it (although it does remind me of the Famous Five, lol).

StampOnTheGround · 24/11/2024 18:58

I think it's a bit wet, it doesn't shorten to anything nice and the long name isn't nice enough to stand on its own.

LadyQuackBeth · 24/11/2024 19:32

Meh is actually a good reaction (if you are just pregnant, people are a lot nicer and more effusive when it's a real baby and a done deal).

It means it's uncommon enough with nothing linked to it, so he can make it his own. The less connotations the better. To much praise is a sign you're on the cusp of a popularity wave, actual dislike means associations.

It might traditionally be a bit posh boy/wet but there are a whole load of little Ruperts and Walters in this generation, which are a million times moreso, so this generation won't think the same way.
