We are due twin boys soon and we still haven’t settled on names.

Our current front runners are Hugo and Magnus.

Thoughts? What else might we like? Really stuck!

ps definitely don’t want to do cutesy/matchy or same first initial

H&M

the Arket Brothers.

Don’t love either as they don’t truncate easily. Hyoo & Mags.
John
Tristan
Guy

I love Magnus and Hugo is nice too.

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 02/11/2024 07:34

Oooh, congratulations! My twin boys are 8 months now. 🥰

I love Magnus and was on my long list but DH wasn't keen. Don't love Hugo but love Bruno, think it goes better with Magnus anyway. We also considered Ivo which I love.

DrLucyVanPelt · 02/11/2024 07:36

Congratulations, from another twin mum! It's a wild ride but wonderful.

I like Hugo but it does seem popular if that's a consideration, less keen on Magnus.

Hugo and Felix- love these
Hugo and Seb(astian)
Hugo and Tom
Hugo and Oscar
Hugo and Lucas
Hugo and Ben(jamin)
Hugo and Edward
Hugo and Rory
Hugo and Sam(uel)
Hugo and Rowan
Hugo and Elliot

I would personally avoid the same initals (practicalities like post etc).

Also think about how their initals go together. My girls are M&S which causes a chuckle sometimes, and much worse put the other way round!

Hugo and Duncan

Also like Cameron and Alistair

There's a radio DJ called Hugo Duncan. People will think you're a fan!

wellingtonsandwaffles · 02/11/2024 07:40

Hugo and Magnus are great
other options
Hugo and Marcus
Hugo and Elis

ones I like of a similar vibe
Jeremiah (Jed)
Ralph
Elijah (Eli)
Sebastian (Seb)
Albert (Albie)

Unicorntastic · 02/11/2024 07:41

Hector
Rufus
Henry
Wilfred
Linus
These all have the same sort of feel to me

2chocolateoranges · 02/11/2024 07:41

I like Hugo but not Magnus.

Nordione1 · 02/11/2024 07:44

Charles and David. Then they could be Chaz and Dave.

I've approached son naming as what would be good if the child becomes either PM or in a band.

PiggieWig · 02/11/2024 07:45

Came here to suggest Mac or Felix but I see someone has beaten me.

Im not a fan of Magnus. I think of Magnus Magnusson from Mastermind. It has a severe, overly serious vibe to me.

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/11/2024 09:28

Hugo and Magnus go well! Other ideas

I like both your names.

Also a twin mum, congratulations 🎉

My only thought, was that the names sound like you're trying to sound posh. Which is fine if you do have quite a grand lifestyle. But, like it or not, will look a bit daft and try-hard if you don't.

This is a good point and why we are not totally sold on them.

We’ve both always liked the name Magnus and I think on its own it stands up well but when we found out it was twins my immediate reaction was that in trying to find a name to go with Magnus, we might find ourselves overdoing it and coming across as try-hard. We are in a firmly desirable and affluent part of the country and would be considered middle class professionals, but I wouldn’t say we have a grand lifestyle. Nobody in our social circle or families would bat an eyelid at them in that way though.

I prefer Magnus to Hugo but as I say, I’m not sure it works well as a twin name. They don’t need to be matchy but they need to have a similar vibe and I’m not sure we can get that with Magnus.

Names I like that have been suggested but we can’t use for various reasons

Jasper
Francis
Elliott
Rory
Patrick

Not keen on Angus or Marcus.

I like Spencer but don’t know if I’m sold on the whole surname as a first name thing.

Surname is Smith so I do feel the need to give them slightly more interesting names. We ruled out Max because I’m not sure Max Smith works very well?

Thanks all for the suggestions so far - I will keep moving through the thread and see what else jumps out.

I like Magnus but it's quite something to live up to. Not keen on Hugo, tbh.

Francis and Sebastian would be a nice pair.

Just throwing some other ideas out there:
Lucas and Jonathan
Clement and Laurence
David and Fabian
James and Simon
Leander and Rowan

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 02/11/2024 11:26

Or go international:

Otto and Leon
Florian and Emil

fandjango · 02/11/2024 11:29

Hugo & Luca
Hugo & Rory

Magnus & Hamish
Magnus & Reuben

Newsenmum · 02/11/2024 11:31

Casper?

fandjango · 02/11/2024 11:31

Oops sorry just realised Rory is out!

Max is a nice alternative to Magnus

The problem with Max and Hugo is it sounds like sizes for boxes of cereal or laundry powder: Huge and Maxi .

Magnus isn’t that much better, meaning great. Huge, great Magnus and Hugo.

I always think Max and Maximus is an awkward name because it’s comical if they are big but also if they are small. To me, Huge-o and Magnus the great have similar issues - and putting them together compounds it all and starts getting silly. I do like the name Hugo on its own.

I like Hugo but prefer Hugh.
Really dislike Magnus.

Well you can’t do Magnus and Spencer op!
( Or Mark and Spencer !)

Magnus is also tricky with names like Otis or Otto as it sounds like Magnum Opus.

I agree it’s actually a tricky name to pair with.

I really like Hugo. I think Spencer could work with it, but it does make me think of Frank Spencer ( Some Mums Do ‘ave ‘em).

Aquacrab · 02/11/2024 12:38

Thomas Smith
Hugo Smith

I really really dislike Magnus.
