I have a Susanna who is a Susie and a Zanna.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 20/10/2024 19:07

I like Susanna (my preferred spelling is Susannah and definitely wouldn’t use Suzanna) and like Zanna.

I also really like Xanthe (think this is my favourite on your list).

hannah and Ellen are alright, can’t really go wrong with them. Not keen on the others

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2024 19:16

Susanna - like it. Works internationally. I also prefer Susannah.
Suzanna (really like Zanna as a nickname) - looks wrong
Xanthe - ok
Elowen - nice enough but she'll be yet another Ellie. Also the EL-ow-en instead of El-OW-en would bug me.
Hannah - family name historically - fine
Ellen - family name historically - ok but another Ellie. Prefer Helen
Maja - Ma-ya or Madge-a? Too close to Mia/Maya/Maia.

DinnaeFashYerself · 20/10/2024 19:18

Other similar sounding names, to me at least, are:

Rosanna
Julianna
Liliana
Victoria

DinnaeFashYerself · 20/10/2024 19:19

Sorry, I forgot to add opinions:

Susanna -somewhat dated, but stands the test of time
Suzanna (really like Zanna as a nickname) - not so keen on the spelling, love the nickname
Xanthe - really don't like
Elowen - pretty
Hannah - family name historically - pretty, timeless
Ellen - family name historically - soid, timeless
Maja - more interesting version of Margaret also a family name - not so keen, what about Meg or Megan?

CheeseWisely · 20/10/2024 19:20

If you like Susanna and you like Zanna, why not use Susanna as long form and Sanna as a nickname?

My favourite on your list is Hannah (or Hanna), it was on our list had we had a girl.

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 20/10/2024 19:20

Eliza
Alana
Anna
Eloise

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/10/2024 19:21

I like Susana (spelled that way) but I do pronounce it with an s noise not a z noise. Many people use a z noise so you will need to know which way you say it.

redtrain123 · 20/10/2024 19:23

Susanna - prefer Z spelling
Suzanna (really like Zanna as a nickname), or Suzanne?
Xanthe - not to my taste
Elowen. - nice, sounds Welsh
Hannah - family name historically, nice
Ellen - family name historically , not keen
Maja - more interesting version of Margaret also a family name, - pronounced Maya? Or Ma-Ja?

suggestions
Lucinda
Vanessa
Gemma
Christina
Katerina
Cassandra
Eleanor
Louella

ZwarteZwaan · 20/10/2024 19:27

Prefer Suzanne to Susanna
Elowen is really lovely to look at written down but I’ve never met one and not sure how to pronounce it (in my head it’s something like “L-O-en”)

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2024 19:42

@ZwarteZwaan , yes. It's El-OW-en but you'll get people stressing the first syllable because of names like Eleanor, Elodie etc.

@redtrain123 , it's Cornish.

shoopshoopdedoo · 20/10/2024 20:17

Susanna - OK, prefer Susie as a nickname, Zanna feels a bit try-hard somehow
Suzanna - prefer the other spelling
Xanthe - nice if a Greek connection
Elowen - not sure, can’t make my mind up!
Hannah - lovely
Ellen - lovely
Maja - not keen, looks like “major” to me, but I do really like Margaret

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/10/2024 22:21

Susanna / Suzanna - lovely name and underused at the moment but every other lady in their 50’s seems to be some version of Sue / Susie / Susan, so Zanna is a lovely variation.

Xanthe - not keen - a bit pretentious to me

Elowen - pretty as long as you don’t mind Ellie (which is the Sue of this generation I think!)

Hannah - love, this seems quite classic and classy rather than dated to me.

Ellen - lovely. As it’s 2 syllables I don’t think it will automatically become Ellie, and you’ve got Nell / Nellie as alternative nn’s if wanted.

Maja - nice if you don’t mind spelling / pronunciation mix ups with Maya / Mia etc

Scutterbug · 20/10/2024 22:24

Susanna is lively.
what about Melissa?

ThisTimeNextWeekDavid · 20/10/2024 22:42

Susannah is just beautiful.

Probably my favourite girls name but unusable in my family due to our surname.

Classic, elegant, strong, feminine, underused, modern, timeless and current; works for a child and an adult.

I’m jealous it’s a contender for you.

Same same but different:

Zephyrine
Melissa
Allegra
Diana
Athena
Felicity

(edit: I clearly like ancient names and those that end in ‘a’!)

bodydrain · 20/10/2024 22:50

Hannah

AgainandagainandagainSS · 20/10/2024 22:54

When I lived in Spain Susana was always my favorite female name.

Hohofortherobbers · 20/10/2024 23:03

I like it, I also like Suzy
How about Zusa? I think it's the eastern European equivalent. Was one of the little girls in 'it's a wonderful life' too lovely film

familyissues12345 · 21/10/2024 07:42

Susanna
Suzanna (really like Zanna as a nickname)
Xanthe
Elowen
Hannah - family name historically
Ellen - family name historically
Maja - more interesting version of Margaret also a family name

I love your list! In particular Elowen, that sounds really pretty

Firsttimebabymummy · 21/10/2024 07:59

Susanna - really like. Prefer Susannah
Suzanna (really like Zanna as a nickname) looks wrong to me
Xanthe - not keen
Elowen - not keen
Hannah - family name historically- lovely name
Ellen - family name historically- not keen
Maja - more interesting version of Margaret also a family name - not keen

Susannah and Hannah are both my favourites, lovely classic names.

Seaside1234 · 21/10/2024 08:05

I wanted Susannah for daughter, husband said no, boo! If it helps, I also liked Gabriella and Tabitha.

3peassuit · 21/10/2024 08:39

I like Suzanna, not too many around either. How about Marianna, Clara, Sylvia?

user1492757084 · 21/10/2024 12:09

All lovely.

user1492757084 · 21/10/2024 12:15

You can't go wrong with those.

I like Susanna and Suzanne best.
Followed by Hannah and Ellen.

How is Maja pronounced?

Do you like Alanna?

OccasionalHope · 21/10/2024 12:19

I love Susanna, and Zanna is fine as a short,
