What do we think of the name Decovan? I had never heard of it before but know of one who is in his early twenties. The more I think about the name the more I like it? Has anyone heard of it before ?

I usually like more unusual names, but this one really does sound like a proprietary brand of something. Like a 'made up by putting two names together' sort of name. Like one of those horrible houses called something like 'Stanaureen'

Uricon2 · 13/10/2024 19:11

Sorry no OP, it does sound like an antibiotic.

How about Cavan?

Looking at the camel case spelling (DeCovan), he or his Mum would probably pronounce that "de-COH-van", whereas if a British person sees "Decovan" they're likely to say "DECK-oh-van". It may be relevant that he apparently prefers to be known as Dee...

For what it's worth I think "Decovan" would be a nice name if it was more common, IYSWIM. Like Donovan. But my rule of names is "If people have to ask you to spell it, choose another name". Even Claire/Clare would annoy me.

sadeightiesthrowback · 13/10/2024 19:30

I pronounce it De CO van.

As I said before, it's unique, and you wouldn't have seven heads turn in the playground when you called it out.
NN could be Dec or Van.
Have a good think about it OP.

HildaHosmede · 13/10/2024 19:36

Sounds like an anti-diarrhea medicine.

Gotosleep91 · 13/10/2024 19:48

I saw the title and thought 'oh dear someone has started a thread about their medication on the wrong board'

Sorry OP it's a no

TriangleSquareFringe · 13/10/2024 20:01

Sorry I thought mediation as well. Canestan actually. I know it's not remotely similar, it just popped in there.
Are there any others you like? Declan is lovely.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 13/10/2024 20:01

It sounds like a constipation medicine.

MrsSunshine2b · 13/10/2024 20:06

It's awful.

Attelina · 13/10/2024 21:06

I thought you had made the name up but there are guys out there with that name!

No. Not in the UK. Sounds like a brand name. I second (third?) the Donovan suggestion, although I don't like Don as a nn as it's an old boy with a flat cap to me.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 13/10/2024 21:20

Awful.

Sockmate123 · 13/10/2024 21:45

Sounds like a blood pressure tablet. Awful

JanefromLondon1 · 13/10/2024 21:47

Surface preparation machines.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 13/10/2024 21:48

Decovan really does sound like a painter and decorator, sorry 🤣 Declan is fine and well known or if you want to go the “surname as first name” route there are lots of similar options - Donovan, Devlin, Sullivan.

Pen9 · 13/10/2024 21:57

Sorry OP but I'll be honest here as I really think they'd grow up to hate their name.

You know how we initially read the start and ends of words (and then some letters in between) - or something like that?! Well, I saw Draconian for a split second then I assumed a DIY post was misplaced in the baby names section.

But I think Decovan has the same unpleasant sound as a word like draconian.

Declan much nicer and Dec is a sweet nickname.

Mitherations · 13/10/2024 22:02

It sounds like you couldn't decide between Declan and Donovan and thought, fuck it.

Also sounds a bit like a something you'd find on the shelf in PetsRUs in the dog worming department.

Don't do it.

strawberry2017 · 13/10/2024 22:10

100% no!

NeckolasCage · 13/10/2024 22:13

That is TRULY terrible. It’s a product name.

‘For persistent diarrhoea, take Decovan’

‘Decovan - for all your decorating needs’

Just absolutely no.

abracadabra1980 · 14/10/2024 02:18

Horrendous.

readingismycardio · 14/10/2024 04:58

Sounds like a medicine name. You have a headache? Take a Decovan and you'll be fine!

MaggieBsBoat · 14/10/2024 05:01

Definitely a great name for an antibiotic!!! A child, definitely not

OnlyOneNotOnWeightLossDrugsInTheVillage · 14/10/2024 05:15

I've never seen a 100% 'no' for a baby name on here before, but I'm afraid I'm going to add to that. I also thought medication.

Christmastinsel78 · 14/10/2024 05:46

Sounds like it should be written on the side of a van 'Decovan- Your man with a van.Call us on xxxx xxxxxx for all your moving needs'

An easy no here.
