Thisbe - too far out?

So is Thisbe a no way or a may be?

Also on the list for a girl (my friend decided against all previous suggestions and is now back on the hunt for something poetic)

Xanthe - I like this one
Ruri - not sure how I feel about taking names from other cultures (Japan)
Romy
Raphaelle
Signe - she would pronounce it a bit like Sidney

the stress that’s going in to this I’m so glad I only have to name my dogs 🐶

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Personally, I'd raise an eyebrow.

It sounds like Frisbee.

Sorry.

I honestly thought it was a typo! Way too out there in my opinion, coming from someone who's daughter's name was used on less than 3 babies in the entire country in the year she was born! Although I'm not bad about any of the names on the list tbh.

MistyF · 07/10/2024 10:20

I love Thisbe. I also love Raphaelle, but may suggest Sigrid instead of Signe

Hoppinggreen · 07/10/2024 10:20

I thought "frisbee" too, sorry

Bbq1 · 07/10/2024 10:22

Thisbe and Signe are terrible names. They sound like they are being pronounced by somebody with a lisp. They are just really imply. Thisbe makes me think of the word, 'lesbian' and Signe if a signal. Ruri is a boys name.

Really ugly, not imply.

Gaph · 07/10/2024 10:29

If I heard someone introduced as Thisbe then I would totally think I'd misheard Frisbee.

LadyDanburysHat · 07/10/2024 10:43

I love Thisbe, and Xanthe. Not sure on Signe

Els1e · 07/10/2024 10:53

I like the name Thisbe but I lisp, so would probably avoid. What about Portia?

LauderSyme · 07/10/2024 10:54

My first thought was "This be where dragons dwell" spoken in an olde worlde Cornish voice! Not that that would disqualify the name necessarily 😉

I think Thisbe matches current name trends pretty well and it sounds nice, with a similar vibe to Phoebe.

But people might not know whether it's Th as in thin or Th as in these, and whether it's S as in snake or S as in rise. I don't know either, to be fair.

I like Xanthe very much then Romy but not keen on the others. Also I wouldn't underestimate the challenge of naming pets!

murasaki · 07/10/2024 10:58

It's a character in a play within a play, A Midsummer Night's Dream. Don't do it.

KirstenBlest · 07/10/2024 11:00

Thisbe Theverse?

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 07/10/2024 11:04

There are so many other, nicer names.

I did know it was a Shakespeare name but it reminds me of Hispi cabbage, the light green pointy one.

Azerothi · 07/10/2024 11:08

It reminds me of theybe, the name ridiculous parents use when they can't decide if their baby's sex is male or female.

Nicebloomers · 07/10/2024 12:19

Most of those a bit inaccessible. Thisbe is very close to frisbee. Romy seems a bit popular. Maybe Romilly? The classic world seems to be a good place to look for something poetic, but a bit more recognisable

Corinna
Sybil
Minerva
Erinna
Hero
Ianthe
Calliope
Persephone
Ariadne
Gaia
Cosima
Nerida

VWAirbag · 07/10/2024 12:21

Love Xanthe.

I fear with Thisbe you’ll get a lot of MND quotes from everyone.

PuppyMonkey · 07/10/2024 12:22

Same as PP, I’d just think “This be a lovely baby” or etc. Grin

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/10/2024 12:22

Romily?

AlexanderArnold · 07/10/2024 12:23

I love Thisbe!

As long as Pyramus doesn't come back into fashion for boys!

BodyKeepingScore · 07/10/2024 12:23

Hard no from me. Sounds like Frisbee.

This is an actual name an actual human will have to carry with them through life...

Newterm · 07/10/2024 12:25

I’d assume you were interested in the Party Wall Act

veritasverity · 07/10/2024 12:28

Thisbe is a bit of a tragic figure! But then people still use Juliet so I guess it doesn't matter too much!
But I can see people taking the piss "and this be Thisbe", "This be or not to This be" she'll get no end of this type of shite, so I'd give it a swerve!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 07/10/2024 12:29

What's wrong with normal, human names?

SatinHeart · 07/10/2024 12:31

Xanthe is nice. Hebe would be a bit less 'out there' than Thisbe.

Fraaahnces · 07/10/2024 12:34

Signe is not pronounced Signy but Signeh (eh is soft like the end of “whisper”.) not sure it translates well, but it means “Swan”. Thisbe “This Be” - no… Xanthe is great. Ruri is ok. People may expect Ruari/Rory. Raphaelle’s fab but a lot to live up to
